What's up folks?! I hope you are ok...

Passar o fim de ano embarcado se tornou rotina desde que comecei a trabalhar em navios de cruzeiros e isso inclui ainda o meu aniversário. Geralmente sao dias bem dificeis pois estamos distantes da familia e amigos. Esse ano pensei que essas celebracoes fossem ser quietas e quase solitárias devido a minha recem chegada ao navio, mas mesmo conhecendo poucas pessoas e ainda na fase de conhecer meus companheiros de trabalho, posso dizer que tive um bom fim de ano embarcado.

Spending the end of the year onboard has become routine since I started working on cruise ships and that includes my birthday. Usually these days are very difficult because we are far from family and friends. This year I thought that these celebrations would be quiet and almost solitary due to my recent arrival to the shi, but even knowing just a few people and still in the process of getting to know my colleagues, I can say I had a good holiday onboard.

New Year's Eve, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Meu aniversário lógicamente nao teve o mesmo agito de outros anos em que eu ja conhecia mais pessoas nos navios onde ganhei até uma Madonna pra compensar o fato de nao poder ir ao show pois estava embarcado no Island Escape em 2008 ou ainda a quase crew party que foi minha festa com o Estefano e a Andrea no Island Star em 2007. Dessa vez a coisa foi mais discreta, mas foi muito bom receber o carinho do pessoal das lojas. No final do dia, minutos depois da meia- noite ganhei varios abracos e felicitacoes além de um bolo, um perfume e uma minitura do navio, que eu realmente queria ganhar.

My birthday was not logically the same mess of other years that I knew more people in the ship where I got one Madonna as gift to make up for the fact of not being able to go to the show because I was aboard the Island Escape in 2008 or the almost crew party for my birthday with Estefano and Andrea at Star Island in 2007. This time the thing was more discree, but it was very nice to receive the affection of the shop personnel. At the end of the day, minutes after midnight I won several hugs and congratulations as well as a cake, a perfume and a ship´s model that I really wanted to win.

Crew Xmas Lunch

Depois fomos para o Bar da tripulacao onde alguém também comemorava o aniversario e por la curti as primeiras horas da nova idade. Durante o dia estavamos em Buzios e juntamente com algumas das meninas da loja fomos ao Chez Michou comer crepe e dar boas risadas. Engracado foi que no meu aniversario de 2008 no Island Escape eu estava nesse mesmo porto durante o dia. Ganhei ainda um presente mais legal: um dia de folga do trabalho que usei pra descansar, ver tv e acreditem lavar roupa, algo importante e que as vezes requer paciencia e persistencia devido a pequena quantidade maquinas de lavar e secar roupas disponiveis para nos tripulantes.

Then we went to the crew bar where another crew also was celebrating his anniversary and I enjoyed it the first hours of my new age. During the day we were in Buzios and with some of the girls we went to the Chez Michou restaurant to eat crepe and have some good laugh. Coincidence that on my birthday in 2008 in Island Escape I was in the same port during the day. I won a even better gift from my manager: a day off from work that I used to rest, watch TV and believe: doing my laundry, something important and that sometimes requires patience and persistence because the small amount of washing machines and dryers available for the crew.

O melhor logicamente veio no dia seguinte, pois o navio estava em Santos e pude desfrutar algumas poucas horas contadas na casa dos meus pais com minha familia e ainda ganhar um delicioso almoco que minha mae preparou como eu pedi. Vale citar que apesar da casa dos meus pais ser em Sao Vicente (cidade vizinha a Santos) ir até lá requer a ajuda do meu pai em me buscar e trazer ao porto de carro, pois acredito que nao seria possivel ir e voltar a tempo usando transporte coletivo. Geralmente eu consigo ficar entre 3 e 4 horas em casa e logo tenho que voltar pro navio, mas é um curto tempo que faz uma grande diferenca e lamento que nem todos os tripulantes possam ter esse mesmo privilégio.

The best part on came the next day because the ship was in Santos and I could enjoy a few hours at my parents' house with my family and had a delicious lunch that my mom prepared as I asked. It is worth mentioning that despite my parents being in Sao Vicente (Santos city close to) go there requires the help of my father to fetch me and bring me to the port by car, because I believe that it would not be possible to go back in time using public transport. Usually I can get 3 to 4 hours at home and then have to go back to the ship but it is a short time that has a big importance and I feel sorry that is not all the crew that has the same privilege.

Alguns dias depois e o navio estava no Rio de Janeiro onde passamos a noite de Natal ancorados no porto. O jantar de Natal foi bem diferente do tradicional: o time da loja foi ao Wú, restaurante de comida oriental do navio e ali fizemos atroca de presentes do nosso amigo secreto. Foi bem divertido e logo em seguida fui com o pessoal para o crew bar. Apesar de ter escapado da escala de IPM (In Port Maning) que por aqui só acontece quando o navio passa a noite em algum porto preferi ficar a bordo. Por incrivel que pareca a cidade fica bem "quieta" nessa noite e pouco agito acontece, sem falar que sair do porto a noite seria bem caro. Umas amigas minha da loja sairam e se arrependeram, pois havia pouca gente na rua e muitos lugares estavam fechados.

A few days later the ship was in Rio de Janeiro where we spent Christmas Eve in the harbor. My Christmas dinner was quite different from the traditional one: the shops team went to the Wu the oriental food restaurant of the ship and there we swap the Secret Santa gifts. It was fun and then immediately went to the crew bar. Although I escaped from the IPM (In Port Manning) schedule which on here it only happens when the ship has some overnight at port but I preferred to stay on board. Oddly enough the city is good "quiet" on that night and nothing much happens aroun and to leave alone the port at night would be very expensive. Some friends from the store left the ship and they repented, because there were few people on the street and many places were closed.

No dia 24 de dezembro a noite ganhamos um presente do Ofical de Seguranca do navio: um treinamento na manha do dia 25 de dezembro, aliás foi mais uma chamada de atencao para procedimentos que deveriam ser corrigidos durante nossos exercicios de seguranca. Alias por aqui a gente faz varios treinamentos e simuldos. No dia 23 de dezembro tive um treinamento que durou mais de 2 horas, pois minha equipe nao conseguia preparar a estacao de lancamento de botes salva vidas corretamente em 90 segundos. Numa das tentativas eu mesmo fui o responsavel por puxar um dos cabos erroneamente tentando ajudar outra tripulante. Consequencia tomei bronca, tive um certo mal estar com alguns outros tripulantes e no final só na 4a tentativa conseguimos fazer tudo certo no tempo exigido. Vale citar que nesse tempo todo em navios eu nunca tinha feito essa preparacao e na minha equipe havia outros tripulantes na mesma situacao.

On the December 24th night we won a gift from the ships´s Safety Officer: a training on the morning of Deember 25th, it was more a reminder of procedures that should be corrected during our safety practices. Actually on here we have several training and drills. On the December 23rd I had a training that lasted over two hours, because my team could not prepare the the lifet raft station for launching correctly in 90 seconds. In one of the attempts I myself was the one responsible for pulling the cables wrongly trying to help another crew. Fate I got some scolding, I had a certain uneasiness with some other crew members and in the end only on the fourth attempt we make it right as required. It is worth mentioning that all this time on ships I've never done this before and on my team there was other crew members that was on the same situation.

O Imperatriz estava em Santos no dia 26 de dezembro, mas nao consegui ir em casa, pois meu pai nao tinha como me ajudar na operacao "carona". O cruzeiro de Ano Novo comecou e tivemos outra pernoite, só que em Buzios e dessa vez eu estava preso a noite pela escala de IPM. O pessoal que saiu se divertiu e infelizmente um outro tripulante brasileiro ficou bem machucado na tentativa de afastar um amigo da provocacao de um grupo provavelmente do local. O rapaz é um cara pacifico e ficou bem machucado pelo "ataque" inesperado do grupo de "animais" que segundo os comentarioss já vinham provocando varios dos tripulantes que passavam por eles no caminho de volta para a embarcacao. Felizmente o rapaz que só acordou no bote de volta do navio todo ensanguentado esta bem e já esta inclusive trabalhando.

The Empress was in Santos on December 26th but I could not go home because my father could not help me with the "ride operation". The New Year cruise began and we had another overnight but in Buzios and on this time I was arrested the night by the IPM schedule. The people who went out had some fun and unfortunately another Brazilaian crew member was injured trying to remove a friend from some provocation of a local group. The boy is a peaceful guy and he was hurt due the unexpected "attack" of the group of "animals"; there was some comments that they were already playing baddly with many of the crew members who passed them on the way back to the vessel. Fortunately the boy who just woke up in the ship´s boat backing to the vessel covered with blood now he is better and even back working.

Durante o dia 31 de dezembro o Empress estava de novo no Rio de Janeiro, assim como outros 12 navios de cruzeiro. Sai durante o dia, mas voltei rapidamente pois a cidade estava cheia de pessoas e muito movimentadas, sem falar que nesse dia existe um esquema especial para o transito e para o transporte coletivo, por exemplo a partir do fim do dia os tickets do metro sao dividos por horarios pre agendados e ja nao haviam mais bilhetes para serem vendidos. No final do dia os navios foram todos para o Mar proximo a praia de Copacabana assistir a tradicional queima de fogos da virada do ano. Como sempre foi bem legal, mas a chuva atrapalhou um pouco a visao. Pudemos também participar da festa para os passageiros na area das piscinas e beber muita champagne com eles.

During the day on the December 31st the Empress was again in Rio de Janeiro, as well as 12 other cruise ships. I went out during the day but I came back quickly because the city was full of people and very busy, not to mention that on that day there was a special schedule and operation for traffic and public transportation, for example from the end of the day thesubway tickets were divided by timescheduled and no longer had any ticket to sell. At the end of the day all the ships were to the sea close to Copacabana beach to watch the traditional fireworks at the turn of the year. As always it was nice but the rain made the view a bit bad. Il joined the passengers party in the swimming pools area and I had plenty of champagne with them.

Devido a chuva poucas pessoas ficaram na area da piscina para a festa, nos da loja fomos para o bar da tripulacao e foi um dos momentos mais divertidos que tive a bordo até o momento. Algumas pessoas do time, pouco acostumadas a bebida logo ficaram mais "soltas" por causa da champagne e pudemos dancar e dar muita risada juntos. Para quem acha que fiquei "louco" acreditem eu era a pessoa mais sobrea do time, mas mesmo assim me diverti bastante.

Due tothe rain just a few people were in the pool area for the party and we from the shops went to the crew bar and it was one of the most fun times that I had on board so far. Some people of the team use to drink little and soon they became more "happy" because of champagne and we were able to dance and laugh a lot together. For those who think I was "high" believe me: I was the conscious one the team on that night but anyway I had a great time.

No dia 1o de Janeiro estavamos em Santos novamente e dessa vez pude ir em casa, mas antes de sair do navio tive de "pagar" a escala de bye bye que nada mais é do que ficarmos na saida do navio dando tchau para os passageiros que desembarcam, nada cansativo, mas significou uma hora a menos para ficar em casa. Fiquei exatas duas horas com minha familia e pude degustar pratos que minha mae deliciosamente preparou. Foi legal porque ainda havia aquele clima de festa e celebracao pela vizinhanca. Infelizmente nem todos os tripulantes puderam disfrutar esse momento e como tudo na cidade estava fechado alguns amigos tiveram de se contentar em apenas comer algo no terminal de passageiros.

In the January 1st I was in Santos again and at this time I went home but before leaving the ship I had to "pay" the bye bye schedule which is nothing more than stay at the gangway of the ship waving goodbye to the disembarking passengers, that is not exhausting but it meant an hour less to stay at home. I spent exactly two hours with my family and I tasted some delicious dishes that my mother prepared. It was nice because there was that atmosphere of festivity and celebration around the neighborhood. Unfortunately not all the crew were able to enjoy this moment and how everything in town was closed a few friends had to be content theirself just eating something in the passenger terminal.

Enontros de Tripulantes

Desde o dia do meu embarque venho encontando amigos de outros contratos. No dia do meu embarque encontrei o Osmany (Honduras) do Escape que agora mora em Santos com a Erika (Brasil) que encontrei numa outra parada em Santos: ambos trabalham no porto de Santos. No shopping Praiamar encontrei o Wagner (Brasil) do Escape que esta embarcado no Costa Fortuna, no mesmo local, mas em outros dias encontrei o Felipe (Brasil) do Escape que mora na Baixada Santista e nao esta mais em barcos. Sem querer vi andando pelas lojas o Rick (Inglaterra) e a Viviam (Brasil) do Star que no momento estao embarcados no Sovereign (Soberano) também da Pullmantur, aliás eu tinha acabado de visitar o navio naquele mesmo dia. Conversei pouco com eles, mas o engracado e ver que anos depois, mesmo com um pouco de sotaque o Rick fala e entende bem portugues. Um encontro bem legal e dessa vez marcado foi com o Caio (Brasil) do Escape em Itajaí, foi bem rapido, mas foi bom rever um amigo que tenho muito carinho. Como alguns desses encontros foram rapidos e de surpresa só tirei fotos com o Caio, com a Viviam e o Rick. Venho tentando outros encontros em Itajaí com o Caio e com a Juliana, mas a minha escala nao tem ajudado muito.

Crew Meetings

From the day of my embark I had meet friends from other contracts. On the day of my board I meet Osmany (Honduras) from the Escape who now lives in Santos with Erika (Brazil) and I meet her at another stop at Santos, both work at the port. At the Praiamar Shop I meet Wagner (Brazil) from the Escape he is now onboard the Costa Fortuna; in the same place, but in a different day I meet Felipe (Brazil) from the Escape he is living near Santos and he is no longer working on ships. Walk around the shops I saw Rick (England) and Vivian (Brazil) from the Star that are currently onboard the Sovereign from Pullmantur also, in fact I had just visited the ship on that day. Just talked with them, but funny to see that years later, even with a little accent Rick speaks and understands Portuguese. A very nice appointed meeting with Caio (Brazil) from the Escape in Itajai, it was pretty fas, but it was good to see a friend that I have great affection. As some of these encounters were fast and surprisingly only took pictures with Caio, and Viviam and Rick. I've been trying other meetings in Itajai with Caio and Juliana, but my schedule has not helped much.

Outro encontro de tripulantes bem interessante aconteceu lá na Africa do Sul: a Luciana minha amiga irma que esta a bordo do Nautica encontrou o Mark la na Cidade do Cabo. Conversei com eles via skype e fiquei até com certa invejinha de estar junto deles, imagine ver duas pessoas que amo muito e nao poder estar com eles. Esses encontros sempre revigoram o animo e o astral; infelizmente sao sempre rapidos, mas por outro lado marcantes na memoria.

Another very interesting crew meeting happened there in South Africa: Luciana my friend sister who is onboard the Nautica meet Mark in Cape Town. I talked with them via skype and I felt a bit jealous to be with them, imagine me seeing two people that I love very much and not being with them. These meetings always invigorate the minds and mood, unfortunately are always quick, but always creates very good memory.

No momento o navio esta fazendo os cruzeiros que vao ate Buenos Aires e Montevideo e tem sido bem legal, apesar dos dois dias de mar que encerram o cruzeiro. Mas vou deixar pra contar mais sobre isso nas proximas atualizacoes.

At the moment the ship is doing the cruises that goes to Buenos Aires and Montevideo and has been pretty cool, despite the two days at sea ending the cruise. But I'll leave it to tell more about on the next updates.

Bem seria uma perda de tempo querer divulgar links de noticias e videos sobre o acidente com o Costa Concordia. Aqui no Imperatriz hoje foi dia de navegacao e logo de manha ao chegar na loja para um longo dia de trabalho a gerente também chocada nos mostrou as fotos enviadas pelo Safety Officer.

Well it would be a waste of time try to post links to news and videos about the accident with the Costa Concordia. Here on the Empress today was a sea day and early in the morning, as I arrivied in the tore for a long working day, the manager also shocked showed us the pictures sent by the Safety Officer on board.

Durante varias vezes no dia pensei nos momentos angustiantes que as pessoas a bordo viveram, principalmente por que eu tenho alguma idéia de espaco e possíveis situacoes. Foi lamentavel ver na tv que o Capitao do navio foi o primeiro a chegar em terra enquanto tudo ocorria a bordo.

For several times during the day at times I thought about what that people lived on board, mainly because I have some idea of space and possible situations. It was sad to watch on TV that the ship´s Captain was the first person to arrive on the land while everything was happening on board.

Pelo que vi agora a noite na internet a comocao e até mesmo uma certa angustia é algo coletivo entre tripulantes e ex tripulantes. Imagine que entre as pessoas desaparecidas podem estar quem nem teve tempo de ser socorrido.

From what I saw on the internet now in the evening the commotion and the anguish is the collective feeling of former crew members and crew. Imagine that among the missing persons may have people who do not had time to be rescued.

Trabalhando comigo nas lojas esta a Carolina que ja foi tripulante do Costa Concordia, aliás foi o último navio em que ela trabalhou antes de embarcar aqui no Imperatriz e ela também ficou bastante chocada. Devido aos nossos intervalos conseguimos assistir juntos ao Jornal Nacional que mostrou várias imagens e até entrevistas de pessoas que ela conheceu. Foi dificil acreditar nas imagens: parecia um filme, mas nao era e no leve balancar do navio e sentindo os tremores do motor do navio vimos a tragédia de tripulantes e passageiros como nós.

Working with me on the store is Carolina that already has been a crew of the Costa Concordia, incidentally was the last ship on which she worked before embarking on here at the Empress and she was also very shocked. Due to our breaks schedule we watched together the Jornal Nacional (the main news TV show in Brazil) that showed several images, and even interviews with people that she met. It was hard to believe on the imagesthat looked like a movie for us, but it was not and mild rocking of the ship we saw the tragedy of the crew and passengers like us having the ship´s engine tremor under us .

A viagem de mudança de navio só não foi mais atribulada porque a companhia aérea me ofereceu um assento num vôo mais cedo sem nenhum custo adicional. Portanto pude chegar a São Paulo mais cedo e ainda ter tempo de passar algumas horas em casa antes de embarcar no Empress (aqui no Brasil chamado pelo nome em português: Imperatriz).

The journey for ship's transfer change was not more troubled because the airline offered me a seat on an earlier flight at no additional cost. So I arrived in Sao Paulo earlier and I still had time to spet a few hours at home before boarding the Empress (here in Brazil called by the Portuguese name: Imperatriz).

O porto de Santos melhorou bastante o espaço físico se comparado com o ano do meu primeiro embarque (2006), mas as operações de embarque e desembarque parecem que ainda precisam ser aprimoradas. O movimento de passageiros é intenso e parece ser lento e demorado, mas honestamente essa é apenas uma percepção visual minha. Mas posso falar do que vivi embarcando novamente como tripulante.

The port of Santos has greatly improved the physical space compared to the year of my first boarding (2006), but the embarking and disembarking operations appear to still need to be improved. The passenger traffic is intense and seems to be slow and time consuming but honestly this is just a visual perception of mine. But I can talk about what I experienced as a crew embarking again.

Port of Santos: my new embarking day!!!

No meu primeiro embarque lembro-me de ter passado cerca de 4 horas aguardando até que eu fosse chamado para entrar no navio. O desembarque foi algo semelhante como relatei aqui no post de dezembro de 2006. O meu segundo embarque no porto de Santos também foi demorado. E para minha surpresa e decepção com toda a "evolução" a longa demora aconteceu novamente.

On my first boarding I remember having to spent about 4 hours waiting until I was called to enter the ship. The landing was something similar as I reported on here in the post by December 2006. My second embarking at the port of Santos was also time consuming. And to my surprise and disappointment with the whole "evolution" the long delay happened again.

Cheguei ao porto de Santos por volta de 12:30 do dia 10 de dezembro e naquele dia havia 5 navios ancorados embarcado e desembarcando passageiros e tripulantes. Apesar de conhecer o sistema preferi checar se havia alguma mudança no procedimento. Perguntei pra 4 pessoas que trabalhavam no local e somente a última me informou o local certo pra onde que eu deveria me dirigir.

I arrived at the port of Santos around 12:30 on the 10th of December and on that day there was five ships anchored embarking and disembarking passengers and crew. Despite knowing the system I preferd to check if there was any change in the procedure. I asked for four people who work on there and only the last informed me the right place to where I should go.

No setor de bagagens entreguei minha mala e comecei a busca por um dos agentes portuário da empresa e não havia nenhum por perto; e descobri ainda que a Policia Federal estava em horário de almoço. A pergunta que não sai da minha cabeça é: com 5 navios de cruzeiro operando no Concais todos os agentes da polícia estavam em horário de almoço? Vale lembrar que várias operações nos navios dependem da autorização deles.

At luggage claim area I gave my bag and started the search for some of the company's port agents and there was none around, and figured out yet that the Federal Police was "closed" due to lunch break. The question that keeps going through my head is: having five cruise ships operating in Concais why is all federal police officers were out to lunch? I should remember that many of the ships operations depend on their permission.

A informação que me deram era de que o horário de almoço demoraria do meio- dia até as duas da tarde; só que o agente disse que poderia entregar meu passaporte para averiguação apenas depois das 3 horas da tarde. Somente fui chamado para o embarque depois das 4 horas da tarde.

The information they gave me was that it the lunch break would take place from noon until two o'clock in the afternoon; but the port agent said to me that he could deliver my passport for inspection only after 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I was called for boarding only after 4 pm.

Essa espera toda acontece no galpão onde as malas são despachadas: quente, sem bancos pra sentar e sem nenhum bebedouro por perto. Em certo momento perguntei se poderia sair dali para comer algo e usar o banheiro do terminal. Quando voltei pra amenizar a espera de pé e tendo uma noite anterior de pouco sono eu sentei no chão em uma sombra que encontrei.

This whole waiting happens in the same area where the bags are checked which is: hot, it has no benches for sitting and no water fountain nearby. At some point I asked if I could get out for eating something and using the bathroom in the terminal. When I returned to lessen the wait standing and having a little sleep on the previous night I sat on the floor in a shadow that I found.

Imagino o "sofrimento" de tripulantes do Brasil e do mundo que viajaram horas, às vezes até mesmo dias sem dormir direito e ainda tem de passar por toda essa espera “sem noção”. Pra quem acha que estou reclamando a toa vale mencionar que já embarquei em outros países e nunca passei por essa situação. Não tive de esperar pra embarcar em diferentes portos na Espanha, na Inglaterra, na Croácia e nem em Grenada. Também não tive problemas para desembarque na Espanha, na Itália, na Turquia, na Inglaterra. Apenas nos Estados Unidos o desembarque demorou pois havia mais de 100 tripulantes de varias partes do mundo desembarcando do mesmo navio.

I can imagine the "suffering" of crew members from Brazil and from other places in the world who traveled hours, sometimes even days without sleep and still have to go through all this "no sense" waiting. For those who think I'm complaining for nothing it is worth mentioning that I already embarked on many other countries and I never experienced this situation. I had to wait to embark on different ports in Spain, England, Croatia and not even in Grenada. Also had no problems for landing in Spain, Italy, Turkey and England. Only in the United States the landing took some time because there were more than 100 crew members from various parts of the world disembarking from the same ship.

Aqui mesmo no Brasil no porto de Recife onde já embarquei e desembarquei algumas vezes, nunca passei por tamanha demora. O que chama a atenção é que pelo local existe um "desfile" de pessoas com crachás pendurados no pescoço, falando em celulares e rádios. Não sei dizer se essas pessoas influenciam ou não no meu embarque, mas elas conversam e dão risadas entre si, saem do galpão pra fumar, comem e acreditem: um rapaz que me mandou esperar do lado de fora de uma sala foi pego por outra pessoa que também trabalhava por lá dormindo enquanto eu estava do lado de fora.

Here in Brazil in the port of Recife where I disembarked and boarded a few times I never experienced such a delay. It is "curious" that the place looks like a "runaway" of people with badges around their necks, talking on mobile phones and radios. I do not know if these people has any influence or not on my boarding but they talk and laugh to each other, leave the area to smoke, eat and believe me: there was a guy who told me to wait outside a room whose was found sleeping by someone else who also was working there while I was waiting outside the room.

- todos os dias a Polícia Federal sai para o almoço ao meio dia e não volta antes das 15 horas.

- Every day the federal police go out for lunch at noon and is not back before 3 pm.

- houve um dia em que tripulantes desembarcaram as 10 da manha e só foram liberados para seguir viagem de volta pra casa às 19 horas. Imagine depois de terminar um contrato de muito trabalho ter de esperar nas condições que eu citei acima por 9 horas e ainda ter de encarar uma viagem que às vezes pode durar até dias de volta pra casa. Eu não sei dizer o que causa a espera e porque não ha um estrutura que acomode os tripulantes durante esse processo. Mas ela acontece num dos maiores e mais importantes portos do mundo e numa já importante temporada de cruzeiros no mundo; e o mais difícil é dizer que isso acontece justamente na minha querida cidade.

- There was a day when some crew landed in the morning at 10 am and only were released to continue their journey back home at 7pm. Imagine after finishing a contract and having to wait long hours under the conditions that I mentioned above for 9 hours and still have to face a journey that can sometimes last up to days back home. I can not tell what causes this wait or even why there is not a structure that accommodates the crew during this process but it happens in one of the largest and most important ports in the world and which has an important season of cruises in the world, and the harder it is to say that it happens in my beloved born city.

Conversei com uma colega de trabalho aqui no Empress e ela me disse que apenas para uma transferência de barcos no porto de Santos teve de esperar longas horas sem poder sair da área de bagagens. A demora é exatamente a mesma apenas para sair de um navio e embarcar em outro.

I talked to a co-worker here at the Empress and she told me that only for a transfer of boats in the port of Santos she had to wait long hours without being able to leave the luggage area. The delay is exactly the same just to get out of a ship and embark on another.

A essa altura o meu humor já não era dos melhores e o cansaço aumentava a cada minuto e mesmo com varias mantras positivos ainda tive de passar por outras "provações" ao chegar ao navio. Tive 3 treinamentos seguidos: Noções básicas de segurança e uma volta pelo navio, Regras e ordens para tripulantes e sobre regras de higiene e limpeza da embarcação. Em seguida preencher e assinar vários documentos e formulários idênticos aos que havia feito dias antes no Ocean Dream. Ainda bem que a gerente do outro navio conseguiu me excluir dos treinamentos por conta da minha transferência.

By this time my mood was not the best and the fatigue increased at every minutes and even with positive my mantras I still had to go through other "trials" as I reached the ship. I followed three trainings in a whole: Understanding Security and a ship´s tour, general rules and orders for the crew and on rules of hygiene and cleanliness of the vessel. Then complete and sign several documents and forms identical to the ones that I had done days before on the Ocean Dream. Thankfully, the manager of the other ship got me out of training because of my transfer.

Deixei minha mala na cabine e fui atrás dos demais procedimentos de embarque a bordo, mas antes consegui passar pelo refeitório e comer algo. Aliás, pra não falarem que eu só reclamo de tudo a comida da Pullmantur por hora tem sido muito boa, uma das melhores que já provei nos navios em que trabalhei. Importante dizer que digo isso se comparado com comida de outros navios, por favor não use como medida o padrão de uma boa comida caseira.

I left my bag in the cabin and I went through some other boarding procedures but I get past by the staff mess and ate something. Indeed for people that says that I only that claim about all: the food on Pullmantur per hour has been very good, one of the best that I've ever tasted working on ships. Important to say that this is compared to food from other ships, please do not use this standard as a measure like some good home cooking.

No mesmo dia eu tinha que trabalhar, mas para isso eu precisava de uniforme e esse foi um processo também muito demorado devido digamos a falhas humanas. Apenas depois das 10 horas da noite consegui todas as peças do meu tamanho. Chegando na loja ganhei a primeira ordem da “Imperatriz” que foi me barbear, confesso que fiquei desapontado, mas o mais difícil foi encarar a maneira como recebi essa ordem. Não houve gritos e nem tons de voz alterados, mas acredito que muitas pessoas teriam desistido de tudo naquela hora mesmo, ainda mais se levado em conta todo o stress do embarque e o cansaço.

On the same day I had to work but for that I needed a uniform and this process was also very time consuming due to human error. Only after 10 pm I get all the pieces of my size´s uniform. Arriving at the store Iwon the first order of "Empress": it was shaving me, I confess that I was very disappointed, but the hardest part was facing the way that I received this order. There was no shouting and no tone of voice changed but I think many people would have given up at situation, especially if taken into account all the stress and fatigue that I already had on that day.

Trabalhei até mais de 2 horas da manhã e no dia seguinte já tive que acordar cedo, pois havia um exercício de segurança da tripulação por volta de 10 horas e em seguida ir para a loja fazer contagens de produtos por conta de uma mudança de gerentes. Confesso que nos primeiros dias no Empress tive vontade de pegar minhas malas e voltar pra casa. Mas respirando fundo e sem querer desistir de um contrato respirei, rezei e segui em frente.

I worked until after 2 am and the next day I had to wake up early because there was a safety crew drill around 10 am and then go to the store to make counting of products because of a change of managers. I confess that on the first day at the Empress I felt like packing my bags and going home. After taking a deep breath and not wanting to give up a contract, I prayed and moved on.

Meu companheiro de cabine nos primeiros dias era o Rafael, instrutor físico do navio e também de São Vicente, muito gente boa e graças a Deus uma pessoa fácil para se dividir a cabine. A partir da segunda semana as coisas deram uma aliviada para nós e as escalas ficaram mais “normais”. No primeiro dia relaxado, o time da loja quase completo e a supervisora de vendas da Pullmantur passamos no Galeras em Balneário Comburiu. Foi bom poder relaxar e tomar uma caipirinha a beira da piscina.
My cabin-mate on the first day was Rafael, he is a fitness trainer on the ship and he is also from Sao Vincent, very good person and I was glad he is an easy person for sharing the cabin. From the second week things got some relief for us and the scales were more "normal." On the first day of relaxing, the team almost complete and the store sales supervisor of Pullmantur, we had some great time at Galeras Bar in Balneario Comboriu. It was good to relax and have some drinks by the pool.

Devido ao horário de abertura das lojas fui poucas vezes ao bar da tripulação e ainda conheço poucas pessoas de outros departamentos, mas confesso estar mais adaptado e ficando cada vez mais a vontade no navio. Bem como voltei a rotina de tempo livre contado e corrido fico por aqui e no próximo post conto como foi o fim de ano a bordo do Imperatriz.

Due to the shop´s opening time I went just a few times to the crew bar and I still knowing jus a few people from other departments. I confess that now I feel more adapted and comfortable on the ship. Well as I returned to the routine of hving short free time I will stop the post now and on the next one I will you know about the End of Year on board the Empress.

What's up folks?! I hope you are OK...

Depois de longo período volto a escrever como tripulante de navio. Estou embarcado no Empress (ou Imperatriz como chamamos no Brasil). Antes de vir para esse navio passei 5 dias no Ocean Dream, ambos são navios da Pullmantur. Contarei sobre os primeiros dias e no próximo post conto sobre o "barquinho" atual.

After a long time I'm back writing as a ship's crewmember. I on board the Empress (or Imperatriz as we call it in Brazil). Before coming to this ship I spent 5 days at the Ocean Dream, both are Pullmantur vessels. I will tell you about the first days and on the next post I will let you know about the actual "boat".

Arriving in Fernando de Noronha

Em outra a principio maluca tentativa sai de Santos e fui pra Curitiba fazer mais uma entrevista na ISM/ Brasil. Fiz um bate e volta de ônibus que me deixou bem cansado. A entrevista foi bem legal e a única decepção foi que a vaga era de atendente de loja e não de assistente de gerente, como eu havia aplicado. Mas depois de tanto tempo esperando uma "vaga legal", resolvi que encararia essa.

In at first moment another crazy trying I went from Santos to Curitiba for having another interview at ISM / Brazil. I did a "go and back" bus trip at the same day that left me pretty tired. The interview was pretty cool and the only disappointment was that the available position was for Gift Shop Attendant and not for Gift Shop Assistant Manager, as I had applied. But after such long time waiting for a "cool position", I decided to face this

Fernando de Noronha: A M A Z I N G ! ! !

Cheguei em Santos mega cansado e fui dormir. Quando acordei já havia resposta de minha aprovação e que eu deveria me preparar para embarcar em breve. No dia seguinte já tinha uma carta de autorização de exames médicos (a Pullmantur paga por isso) e a data de embarque, que seria em uma semana, no Ocean Dream. Eu deveria apenas providenciar a passagem pra Recife.

I arrived in Santos "super" tired and went to sleep. When I woke up I had my approval response saying that I should prepare myself to embark soon. On the next day I had a letter of authorization for medical examinations (Pullmantur pay for it) and the embarking date, that it would be in a week at Ocean Dream. I should just provide the flight ticket to Recife.

No inicio da semana do embarque a Royal Caribbean entrou em contato comigo, pois como a Pullmantur estava criando um numero de identificação para mim isso acusou no sistema da Royal (as duas companhias fazem parte de uma mesma empresa). Eu disse que gostaria muito de embarcar num dos navios da RCCL, mas que havia se passado mais de 7 meses e eu precisava de uma resposta concreta.

Earlier on the boarding week Royal Caribbean contacted me, because as Pullmantur was creating an identification number for me it accusedon on the Royal's system (the two cruise line are part of the same company). I told them that I would like to embark in some the RCCL ships but it already had gone more than seven months waiting and at that point I needed a concrete answer.

Seguindo vários conselhos e também o que eu achava certo dei andamento ao processo da Pullmantur, ja que a Royal continuava me mandando esperar algo concreto. No processo da Pullmantur os exames "demoraram" pra serem liberados e por um dia a passagem aérea teve acréscimo de mais de R$300. Bem os exames ficaram prontos e antes de confirmar a compra da passagem aérea contatei a Royal que ainda não tinha a resposta final pra minha vaga no departamento de excursões.

Following some advices and also what I thought it was right I continued the Pullmantur process since the Royal continued asking me to expect something concrete. In the process of Pullmantur the medical tests "took some time" to be released and in just one day the airfare increased over R$ 300 (around US$150). Well the exams were ready, and before confirming the purchase the ticket I contacted Royal Caribbean that had not yet the final answer to my job in the department of excursions.

Lógico que fui adiante com a Pullmantur e no começo da noite do dia antes de eu embarcar no Ocean Dream chegou a minha carta de embarque no Explorer of the Seas no dia 30 de dezembro em New Jersey. Fiquei bem tentado a aceitar essa proposta que eu esperei tanto, mas o problema era o quanto isso iria me custar. Numa consulta rápida pela internet com menos de 1 mês pra data da passagem os preços eram de cerca de R$4 mil e possivelmente iriam aumentar até que eu tivesse a confirmação do meu visto americano (a Royal me deu uma carta para pedido de visto de emergência) mas mesmo assim isso levaria pelo menos de uma a duas semanas. Eu teria de pagar ainda pelos custos do visto, incluindo a ida até São Paulo e também pagar pelos meus exames médicos.

Of course that I followed ahead with the Pullmantur and on the early evening before the day I board the Ocean Dream I received my letter of embark on the Explorer of the Seas on December 30 in New Jersey. I was very tempted to accept this proposal that I waited for so long, but the problem was how much it would cost me. In a quick internet search one month early the date the prices were around R$ 4000 (around US$2000) and possibly it would increase until I had the confirmation of my American visa (Royal gave me a letter for emergency visa application) but anyway that would take at least one to two weeks. I would still have to pay for the cost of the visa, including a trip to Sao Paulo and also pay for my medical exams.

Depois de algum tempo em casa eu já não tinha muito dinheiro pra investir nisso e com um grande "nó no coração" tive de dizer não a Royal Caribbean. Afinal, era mais viável pra mim arcar com os custos da passagem até Recife do que com a ida pros Estados Unidos em plena véspera de Ano Novo. O roteiro do Ocean Dream me chamou atenção pelo simples fato de ter Fernando de Noronha como porto regular e os demais portos do Nordeste eram lugares que eu gosto bastante.

After some such time at home I did not have much money to invest in it and having a big "node in the heart" I had to say no to Royal Caribbean. After all, it was more feasible for me to pay for the Recife air ticket than for a flight to United States near the New Year's Eve. I liked the Ocean Dream's itinerary for the simple fact of having Fernando de Noronha as a regular port and the other ports in the Brazilian Northeast were places that I quite like.

Ocean Dream Crew Bar

O Ocean Dream é um barco pequeno e construído na década de 80, já pertenceu a Carnival e a Costa. O legal de lá era a animação de boa parte da tripulação e a proximidade causada por um navio pequeno. Outra particularidade da Pullmantur é a língua a bordo, pois a cia é Espanhola e vários dos tripulantes são latinos, portanto falamos espanhol o tempo todo, inclusive em alguns treinamentos.

The Ocean Dream is a small boat and she was built in the 80's, before it was owned by Carnival and Costa. The crew animation was very cool and also the proximity caused by a small ship. Another feature is the language on board Pullmantur because the CIA is Spanish and several of the crew members are Hispanic, so we speak Spanish all the time, including in some of the training.

No time da loja era 3 chinelos, 1 hondurenha, 1 colombiano, 2 brasileiros a gerente espanhola e um búlgaro com o espanhol bem afiado e já falando "um poquinho" de português. As lojas eram pequenas e o sistema de trabalho um pouco diferente embora eu ja conhecesse a maioria de tudo que vendemos por aqui. Nos primeiros dias eu sentia dor por todo o meu corpo principalmente nos pés e nas costas. Teve um dia que tive o forte desejo de largar as mesas com todos os produtos e ir pra minha cabine deitar de tanta dor que sentia. Posso dizer que mais de 10 dias depois de embarcar já estou quase 100% acostumado a estar novamente em pé por tantas horas e mantendo o bom humor com os passageiros.

At the store team we were 3 Chileans, one Honduran, one Colombian, two Brazilians and the Spanish manager and a Bulgarian speaking Spanish very very well and also "a little bit" of Portuguese. The shops were small and the working system a bit different but I already knew most of the products that we sell here. On the early days I had pain all over my body especially on my the feet and back. There was a day that I had the strong desire of leaving the tables with all the products and go to my cabin to lie down due so much pain I felt. I can say now that more than 10 days later I'm almost 100% on track again to be stand on my feet for many hours and keeping the good mood music to passengers.

O navio era simples mas adorava minha cabine no Ocean Dream, sem falar que meu companheiro de cabine era o Oscar, um colombiano super gente boa que lamentei bastante ter de deixar. Aliás minha transferência foi mega surreal, no dia seguinte ao meu embarque a supervisora de vendas dos navios da Pullmantur me disse que eu seria transferido para o Empress. Na hora fiquei indiferente afinal havia acabado de chegar e não tive tempo nem de conhecer o navio direito.

The ship was simple but I loved my cabin at the Ocean Dream, not to mention my cabin mate Oscar, a Colombian super good people who I regretted having to leave. In fact my transfer was super surreal, on the day after my boarding the Pullmantur's sales supervisor told me I would be transferred to the Empress. At the time I was indifferent after all I had just arrived and had no time to meet the ship very well.

No cruzeiro que embarquei várias mudanças e arrumações estavam sendo feitas nas lojas e isso significa trabalhar enquanto as lojas estão fechadas e não ter tempo de sair do navio. O Ocean Dream passa dois dias em Fernando de Noronha e resolvi que sairia por lá mesmo que me custasse descansar menos e assim foi. No primeiro dia sai por cerca de 4 horas e conheci as praias do Cachorro, praia do Meio e praia da Conceição: lindas e maravilhosas. No segundo dia por conta de uma festa brasileira no crew bar eu estava bem cansado (mesmo sem beber nada alcoólico na festa, só coca cola) e sai por mais algumas horas nas praias próximas ao porto. Infelizmente não pude ir nas praias mais distantes da ilha e ver os golfinhos, tartarugas e corais. Mas confesso que amei o lugar: é realmente lindo e com praias tão maravilhosas ou até melhor que muitas outras no Caribe.

During my first cruise there was many changes being made in the stores and that means working while the shops are closed and have no time to leave the ship. The Ocean Dream spends two days in Fernando de Noronha and I decided to go out even that it would cost me having less resting, so it happened. On the first day I went out for about 4 hours and visite the beache of the Dog, Middle Beach and Conception beach : it was beautiful and wonderful. On the second day because of a Brazilian party in the crew bar I was pretty tired (even without drinking any alcohol at the party, only coca cola) and I went for a few more hours on the beaches near to the port. Unfortunately I could not go farther on the island to see the dolphins, turtles and coral. But I confess that I loved the place: it's really beautiful, with wonderful beaches, some of it better than many others in the Caribbean.

A preservação em Fernando de Noronha é outra coisa legal, pois existem praias em que não é permitido a entrada e somente 500 pessoas podem visitar a ilha por dia. Mesmo tendo capacidade para mais de 1000 passageiros apenas quinhentos passageiros podiam estar a bordo por cruzeiro. Espero que isso seja mantido e que no futuro eu possa voltar por lá.

The enviromental preservation in Fernando de Noronha is another cool thing, because there are beaches where the entry is not permitted and only 500 people can visit the island per day. Even having a capacity for more than 1000 passengers the Ocean Dream could have only five hundred passengers on board for that cruise. I hope this is maintained and that in the future I can get back there.

Devido ao pouco tempo livre e pelo curto período a bordo pouco tive de vida social, mas conversei com pessoas bem legais e notei uma incrível interação entre a tripulação. A noite brasileira foi mega animada, mesmo num espaço bem pequeno pra um crew bar. Na véspera de eu ir embora também passei pelo bar e tomei alguns drinks com os outros rapazes que trabalhavam comigo na loja.

Due to the short free time and the little on board period I had little social life but I talked to some nice people and I noticed an amazing interaction between the crew. The Brazilian night was so cool, even with the very small space for a crew bar. The day before I leave I went to the bar again and also had a few drinks with the other guys who work on the store.

Fernado de Noronha: Praia do Cachorro (Dog's beach) ?!?!?!?!

Foi um período bem curto, mas foi o suficiente pra trazer boas lembranças do navio e de algumas pessoas de lá. No próximo post conto sobre o meu sofrido embarque no porto de Santos e dos meus primeiros dias aqui no Empress.

It was a very short period, but it was enough to bring good memories of the ship and from some people there. In the next post I will tell you about my nightmare of embarking at the port of Santos and my first days here at the Empress.

Bem muita coisa aconteceu nesse tempo fora de navios: fiquei um tempo bem legal na África do Sul e passei um bom período no Brasil procurando uma nova Cia para embarcar. Apesar de amar minha empresa anterior, infelizmente trabalhar com algumas pessoas por lá não era mais viável e foi bem chato sair dela. Eu e o Mark tentamos o nosso embarque junto em algumas Cias e cada uma com repostas diferentes diziam que isso não seria possível.

Well a lot has happened for me on this time out of ships: I spent some cool time in South Africa and spent a good period in Brazil looking for a new cruise line to-embark. Despite loving my previous company, unfortunately there was no longer any viable way of working with some people there and this was a bit sad for me. Mark and I tried boarding together in some companies but each one of it had different answers to tell us that it would not be possible.

Por razões pessoais achei que tentar embarcar aqui no Brasil seria mais fácil pra mim. Eu acreditava ainda que fosse um processo mais rápido, mas não foi. A realidade do mercado recrutador aqui no Brasil mudou muito desde o meu primeiro embarque em 2006 no Island Escape, através da (eu acho) extinta Work at Sea. Passei por cadastros e entrevistas pelas mais conhecidas agências recrutadoras e hoje a coisa está muito mais profissional.

For personal reasons I believed that would be easier for me try to get a new position here in Brazil. I believed also that it would be a faster process, but it was not. The reality of the recruiting market here in Brazil has changed a lot since my first embarking in 2006 on the Island Escape, by (I think) the extinct Work at Sea agency. I went through applications and interviews on the most famous recruiting agencies here in Brazil and today things are much more professional.

Pelo que notei essa profissionalização criou um mercado próprio de escolas que ensinam desde Noções de Vida a Bordo até Treinamento para várias das funções de trabalho em um navio. Algumas dessas agências que visitei mudaram as instalações para espaços mais amplos assim como a abordagem com os alunos. Antigamente cobrava-se um taxa de agenciamento, que “parece” ser proibida atualmente então criaram- se esses cursos onde geralmente os alunos são encaminhados para entrevistas com as Cias Marítimas.

From what I noticed this professionalization has created a niche market of schools that taught from basics about Life on Board until training for many working jobs on a ship. Some of these agencies that I have visited moved to larger spaces as well the approach with students. Formerly it use to be charged an agency fee which now "seens" to be banned, so these courses have been created where students are often sent to interviews with the Cruise Lines.

O lado positivo é que hoje um tripulante quando embarca não pode alegar desconhecimento total da vida de tripulante e do trabalho. Por outro lado as agências/ escolas dizem que a porcentagem de aprovação deles é alta, mas nenhuma delas garante a vaga de emprego. As contratações acontecem o ano inteiro, mas quem tem experiência anterior pode sair na frente e pode ter embarque mais rápido. As posições nas lojas, na recepção, nas excursões e em outros departamentos pequenos têm número de vagas bem menor se comparado com as vagas de Hotel (bar, restaurante e governança).

The upside is that today when a crew member embarks he can not claim total ignorance of life and work onboard. On the other hand the agencies / schools say that the percentage of their approval is high but none of them guarantees the job vacancy. The signings happen throughout the year but who has previous experience may have some advantage and may have a new contract faster. The positions in stores, on reception, on excursions and other small departments have short number of vacancies if compared with the hotel department (bar, restaurant and governance).

Quando cheguei no Brasil uma das primeiras entrevistas que fiz foi com a Royal Caribbean em São Paulo. Fui aprovado para uma vaga no departamento de excursões. E a primeira solicitação foi renovar o Curso Básico de Segurança de Navio, o famoso SCTW. O diploma não tem prazo de validade, mas a Marinha Brasileira exige um novo diploma a cada 5 anos. Fiz o curso em maio na mesma escola que havia feito anos atrás: na Zorovick & Maranhão. As instalações pouco mudaram, mas o curso ficou mais incrementado tendo inclusive um dia de prova prática, algo que não existia antes.

When I arrived in Brazil one of the first interviews that I had was with Royal Caribbean in Sao Paulo. I was approved for a vacancy in the tour department. The first request was to renew the Basic Ship Security Course, the famous SCTW. The certificate has no validity but the Brazilian Navy requires a new one every five years. I took the course in May in the same school that had done years ago: in Zorovick & Maranhão. The facilities have changed just a little but the course was even more increased with a day of practice test, something that never existed before.

Confesso que gostei bastante dessa parte prática da coisa: tivemos de apagar fogo usando a mangueira e o extintor. Simular resgate de feridos, onde todos tinham de ser carregados, inclusive eu. Fiquei com penas dos demais membros da minha equipe por terem de carregar alguém grande e pesado como eu. A prova prática tinha ainda uma série de procedimentos no mar, usando bote e colete salva- vidas. Isso também foi legal, mas apesar de parecer algo simples; assumo que deu um gelo na barriga quando subi na plataforma de 3 metros de altura e tive de pular no mar. Respirei fundo e “soltei” meus mais de 100kg na água. Os demais procedimentos foram bem legais e sem nenhuma grande dificuldade.

I confess that I quite liked this practical part: we had to put out the fire using hose and fire extinguisher. Simulate rescue of wounded, where everyone had to be loaded, including me. I felt sorry for the other members of my team because they have to carry someone like me: big and heavy. The practical test also had a series of procedures at sea, using boat and life jacket. It was also nice but despite seem very simple, I assume that I felt a bit scared when I got on the platform 3 meters high and had to jump into the sea. So I had a deep breath and "let it go" my more than 100kg in the water. On the other procedures I was quite good and had any great difficulty.

A provinha teórica do curso também foi fácil e logo eu tinha meu novo certificado nas mãos. Faltava apenas a vaga pra eu embarcar. Os meses foram passando e nada da minha data e navio de embarque. Foi quando decidi tentar os processos seletivos de outras agências. Fui aprovado em alguns processos, fui reprovado em outros, em alguns não tive resposta até hoje. Em uma das agencias mesmo com toda minha experiência em lojas o entrevistador me ofereceu uma vaga de assistente de garçom. Para quem não acompanha o blog desde o começo eu fiz dois contratos como garçom e esse é um trabalho que respeito muito pela dificuldade dele; mas pra quem quiser tentar existem boas remunerações para ele.

The theoretical test was easy and soon I had my new certificate on hand. There was missing my embark details. Months passed and nothing of ship and date of my embarking. That's when I decided to try the selection processes of other agencies. I got approved in some, I failed in others and I had no answer of others. In one of the agencies even with all my experience in the stores the interviewer offered me a job as an assistant waiter. For those who do not follow the blog from the beginning I did two contracts as a waiter and this is a job that I respect a lot because I know much about the difficulty of it but for those who want to try there is good pay for it.

Pode parecer arrogância minha, mas quem me conhece sabe que não é, mas fiquei bem desapontado com a oferta, afinal não era nem uma vaga de garçom, mas pra assistente. Entendo que iniciar numa nova Cia muitas vezes requer iniciar nas funções de base de um departamento, mas ainda assim eu acredito estar preparado para outras vagas.

It may seem arrogant of me but who knows me, knows that is not but I was quite disappointed with the offer, after all was neither a waiter's job but for assistant. I understand that starting on a new CIA often requires starting from the basic functions of a department but I still believe to be prepared for other vacancies.

Acredito que minha experiência não pode ser tomada como a mais precisa sobre a qualidade das agências, mas confesso ter ficado desapontado com o tratamento oferecido por algumas. Sugiro apenas que antes de efetuar qualquer valor, faça uma pesquisa sobre o assunto, sobre a escola e se o que é oferecido vai de encontro com as suas expectativas. Mas principalmente analise bem antes de embarcar a sua pré disposição para encarar as longas horas de trabalho e o tipo de tarefa executada na função em que você pretende se candidatar.

I believe my experience can not be taken as the most accurate on the quality of the agencies but I confess to being disappointed with the treatment offered by some. I suggest only that before paying any value, do a search on the subject on the school and about what is offered will meet your expectations. But mostly: think about seriously before embarking on your predisposition to face the long working hours and type of work performed for job position that you want to apply.

Eu certamente terei novidades minhas a bordo, mas vou deixar essa história pra eu contar quando eu estiver em algum porto do mundo.

Encontrei esse video- documentário na web e achei-o muito legal. A produção é muito boa e se destaca dentre os materiais postados por tripulantes na internet. O filme foi produzido por Daniela Zaror, que parece ser fotógrafa, de origem latina e tudo indica que ela gravou o video em algum navio da Royal Caribbean. Tentei contato com ela, mas até o momento não tive resposta, caso isso aconteça eu atualizo esse post. O video tem cerca de 30 minutos recheados de depoimentos interessantes de diferentes tripulantes e chama a atenção pela edição e sons típicos de um navio de cruzeiro. I found this documentary video on the web and on my opnion it is pretty cool. The production is very good and stands out among the materials posted on the Internet by the many crewmebers. The movie was produced by Daniela Zaror, which seems to be a photographer, from Latin origin and it seems that she recorded the video at some of the Royal Caribbean ships. I tried to contact her but so far I have no answer, if it happens I will update this post. The video is about 30 minutes full of interesting testimonials from different crewmembers and get the attention to because of the editing and sounds typical of a cruise ship. A noticia da morte de uma turista americana a bordo do navio MS Veendam da Holland America foi divulgada na internet e TV a cabo. O navio saiu do Uruguai e ancorou no Rio de Janeiro hoje de manhã com o corpo da turista que ainda não tem a causa da morte divulgada.

The news about the death of an American tourist on board the vessel MS Veendam from Holland America Line was released on the internet and cable TV today. The ship that came from Uruguai has docked on Rio de Janeiro this morning with the body of the tourist and the cause of death has not been released.

Existe a possibilidade da causa da morte ter sido natural, algo comum em navios de cruzeiros. Principalmente em alguns cruzeiros que costumam navegar com passageiros idosos. Já presenciei essa situação e geralmente não há maiores mudanças na rotina da embarcação. Pode acontecer ainda de o passageiro passar mal e ser resgato por um helicóptero no meio do mar.

There is the possibility of the cause of death was natural, something common on cruise ships. Especially in some cruise ships that usually sail with elderly passengers. In my first contract a passenger disappeared and her body was only found a few days later in some Italian island. O G1 publicou que o navio estava em código vermelho, procedimento comum quando existem muitas pessoas a bordo com diarréia e uma série de procedimentos mais rígidos é colocada em prática. Confesso que é uma rotina horrível e faz toda a tudo a bordo ser alterado: não podemos nos servir nos refeitórios, áreas do navio são interditadas e se contaminado somos isolados com dieta especial. No caso de dividir a cabine, todas os ocupantes são proibidos de deixar a cabine sob risco de pena de demissão. Dependendo da quantidade de casos registrados o navio pode ser impedido de navegar e a tripulação proibida de sair da embarcação.

The Brazilian web site G1 reported that the ship was in Code Red, common procedure when there are many people on board with diarrhea and a more rigid set of procedures is put into practice. I confess that is a terrible routine and changes everything on board: we can not serve ourselves in the crew mess, some areas of the ship are forbidden and in case of being contaminated the person is insulated with a special diet. In the case of sharing the cabin, all the occupants are not allowed to leave the cabin at risk of dismissal penalty. Depending on the number of reported cases can the ship can not sail and the crew are not allowed to leave the vessel.

Essas situações reforçam a importância dos constantes treinamentos de segurança e higiene que existem a bordo das embarcações. Lavar as mãos antes das refeições e após usar o banheiro são hábitos essenciais para a nossa higiene e a bordo de um navio ganham importância redobrada, essa dica vale para futuros tripulantes e passageiros. A rotina de código vermelho pode interferir também n as atividades normais para passageiros.

These cases reinforce the importance of all the constant safety and hygiene trainings on aboard the ships. Wash the hands before meals and after using the toilet are essential habits to our health and on board a ship it gains double importance, this tip goes for future crew members and passengers. The code red routine can also interfere the normal onboard activities for passengers.

Esse é meu último capítulo a bordo de um navio, até o momento. Aconteceu há mais de um ano: desembarquei do Aegean Odyssey em setembro de 2010. Mas com as minhas idas e vindas, faço esse relato apenas agora. A verdade é que já pensei várias maneiras de contar essa “história” e se eu for me pegar na realidade, temo que fique muito dramático e uma narração muito chata; afinal esse é um navio muito diferente de todos os outros que trabalhei. A verdade é que muito do que eu sabia de vida a bordo tive de deixar de lado, pois as coisas não funcionavam como em outro navio. Apesar de eu estar parecendo pragmático e pessimista quem já trabalhou embarcado iria concordar comigo.

This is my last chapter on board a ship, so far. It happened over a year, I disembarked the Aegean Odyssey in September 2010. But with my comings and goings I will make this report just now. The truth is that I've thought about several ways to tell this "story" but I was afraid that would be a very dramatic and very boring story, after all this is a very uncommon ship specially if compared with any other that I've worked before. The truth is that most of the things that I knew of life on board I had to put on the side because as things did not work as any another ship. Although I do not want to seem pessimistic or pragmatic but any crew member would agree with me.

THE SHIP

Quando pesquisei sobre o Aegean Odyssey na internet a encontrei a informação de que a capacidade era de 520 passageiros e cerca de 200 tripulantes; na prática o maior cruzeiro que tivemos foi com pouco mais de 200 passageiros e em média 120 tripulantes. Dessa tripulação todo o staff de hotel era de filipinos, ou seja, apesar de muitos serem legais eles interagiam mais entre si; alguns gregos, ingleses e outras nacionalidades com um ou dois tripulantes. A informação que recebemos foi que aquele era um projeto inovador de um milionário inglês de criar cruzeiros voltados para historiadores e arqueólogos.

When I checked the Aegean Odyssey on the internet I found the information that the capacity was 520 passengers and about 200 crew members, in practice on the largest cruise there was just over 200 passengers and 120 crew members on average. The majority crew hotel were Filipino and even with many of then being very cool they used to interacted more with each other; there was also some Greeks, British and other nationalities with one or two crew. The information we received: that was an innovative project from an English millionaire of creating cruises aimed at historians and archaeologists.

NAUPLIA, GREECE

A loja realmente era pequena e bonitinha, mas com o tempo descobrimos muita coisa errada e por fazer. A grande decepção veio ao chegarmos à nova cabine: pequena e muito quente, um grande choque, pois na comparação com a do Ocean Village (que era a cabine sonho de todo o tripulante) perdemos muito. Eu confesso que mesmo com todas as cobranças e até mesmo trabalhando mais, sempre preferi navios de médio e grande porte. Os pequenos teoricamente são mais fáceis para trabalhar, mas eu não gosto por vários razões: uma delas é a falta de vida social. Houve algumas festas para tripulação, mas mesmo com a gentileza e amabilidade de várias pessoas eram bem diferentes do que eu estava acostumado.

The store was really small and cute but over time we found a lot wrong things to arrange. The big disappointment came when we got the new cabin: small and very hot, a great shock, because in comparison to the Ocean Village (which was the cabin dream of all crew) we loose a lot. I confess that even with all the pressure and even working harder I always preferred medium and large vessels. The small one is theoretically easier to work but I do not like for several reasons: one is the lack of social life. There were some crew parties but even with gentleness and kindness of many people it were quite different from the ones that I used to join.

AGIOS NIKOLAOS, GREECE

Assim como em outros navios pequenos, não havia um bar de tripulante: uma vez por semana podíamos comprar água e refrigerante com o chefe do estoque. Sair do trabalho e tomar uma cerveja para relaxar era simplesmente impossível, pois oficialmente nenhum tripulante podia beber a bordo, mas com o tempo tivemos permissão pra bebermos na área de passageiros em algumas ocasiões. Num dos portos encontrei um grupo de tripulantes bebendo cerveja quente num canto escondido do porto para tentar ter alguma diversão.

Just like in some other small ships there was no crew bar: once a week we could buy water and soda with the Provision master. Finishing the work and have a beer to relax was simply impossible, because the official rule says that crew could not drink on board but passing the time me and Mark were allowed to drink in the passenger area in some occasion. In one of the ports I found a group of crewmembers drinking warm beer in a hidden corner of the harbor trying to have some fun.

ITHEA, GREECE

Nós tínhamos de pagar para lavarem nossas roupas pessoais e apesar da gentileza dos rapazes da lavanderia o equipamento usado por eles estragou e encolheu varias roupas minhas. Não havia outro lugar para lavarmos roupas, os uniformes como de praxe eram lavados de graça. Depois de quase um mês a bordo foi inaugurada a academia de tripulantes, que era uma sala bem pequena e pouco equipada.

We had to pay to wash our personal clothes and despite the kindness of the boys working at laundry, the equipment used by them shrank and ruined several clothes of mine. There was no place to wash our clothes; the uniforms were washed as usual for free. Only after almost a month on board the crew gym were inaugurated but was a very small room and poorly equipped.

LIMNOS, GREECE

A comida para nós staff geralmente era boa, mas os horários eram bem restritos e a noite era um drama encontrar o que comer: eu simplesmente enjoei de comer batata Pringles e chocolate, além dos quilos a mais que isso me ajudou a ganhar. Como não havia frigobar na cabine também não dava pra fazer comprinhas nos supermercados dos portos.

The food for us staff was generally good but the "officers' mess" opening times were very restricted and during the night was a drama to find something to eat: I just got sick of eating chocolate and Pringles potatoes, that helped me in the addition to the extra pounds that I got. Due there was no fridge in the cabin we could not shopping in the ports' supermarkets.

DUBROVNIK, CROATIA

Era interessante poder ver de perto todas as manobras de chegada e saída do navio nos portos. Devido ao tamanho e divisão dos espaços, a área liberada para tripulantes fumarem era na popa da embarcação junto aos vários cabos e engrenagens. Lógico que durante essas manobras a gente só podia ficar “no cantinho”, mas dava pra ver tudo de pertinho. Ah, eu não fumo, mas sempre acompanhava o Mark e era uma área arejada com uma boa vista pra tomar um cafezinho.

It was interesting to see up close all the maneuvers of arrival and departure of the vessel in port. Due to the size and the space division the crew smoking area was located in the stern of the vessel having around the various cables and gears. Logical that during these maneuvers we could only get "the corner", but I could see everything close. Oh, I do not smoke but I always followed with Mark, it was a nice area to take some fresh air with a good view for having a nice cup of coffee.

SPLIT, CROATIA

Os portos visitados geralmente tinham ruínas e sítios arqueológicos, mas nem sempre esses locais ficavam perto dos portos e eu não participei de nenhuma excursão. O primeiro cruzeiro foi bem diferente, pois era para um grupo de passageiros russos. Imagine a conversação num navio que eu não conhecia a loja direito e tinha que usar gestos para me comunicar com passageiros (muitos deles não falavam inglês). Nessa viagem também tive a frustração de não poder descer (eu e o restante da tripulação) em dois novos países: na Tunísia e na Ucrânia, simplesmente por capricho de “alguém” que não ficava a bordo, mas queria administrar tudo com berros e gritos toda vez que aparecia.

The visited ports were usually full of archaeological sites but these places were not always close to the ports and I did not participate in any tour. My first cruise was very different because it was a charter of Russian passengers. Imagine the conversation on a ship that I did not know the store properly yet and having to use gestures to communicate with passengers (many of them did not speak English). On this trip I also had the frustration of not being allowed (I mean the entire crew) to go down in two new countries: Tunisia and Ukraine, just a whim of "someone" that was not on board all the time but used to manage everything with screams and cries every time he appeared

CANAKKALE, TURKEY

Os itinerários eram bem diferentes: tinha um cruzeiro de 2 semanas que saia de Piraeus na Grécia e contornava toda a Sicilia, na Itália. Acabado esse cruzeiro repetíamos tudo com novos passageiros fazendo o percurso inverso, apesar de algumas noites em porto eu não gostava desse roteiro. Conheci também várias ilhas pequenas na Grécia e por repetidas vezes passamos 3 noites seguidas em Veneza: o que me fez “enjoar” da cidade. Lembre-se que já citei aqui antes que Veneza é uma cidade muito cara e não vale à pena pagar muito pra repetir coisas e lugares.

The itineraries were very different: it had a 2 week cruise leaving from Piraeus in Greece and surrounding the whole Sicily, Italy. Next we use to repeat all over this cruise with new passengers doing the opposite route, although some overnights in port I did not like that much of this route. I also visited several small islands in Greece and for several occasions I spent 3 nights in Venice, which made me "get tired" of the city. Remember that I mentioned on here before that Venice is a very expensive city and for me is not worth paying so much to repeat things and places.

KUSADASI, TURKEY

No Aegean Odyssey além de às vezes fazermos dois portos num mesmo dia passávamos várias noites em porto. Pode parece algo interessante, pois para nós na loja isso representa trabalhar menos, mas num navio e em portos sem muitas opções do que fazer isso se torna um grande tédio. Foi bem chato não poder assistir a final da Copa do Mundo, pois não havia nenhum canal a bordo mostrando o jogo. Assistimos a CNN descrevendo o jogo entre uma notícia e outra.

On the Aegean Odyssey sometimes we docked on two different ports on the same day and also we spent several nights in port. It may seem quite interesting since in the store this means less working hours for us but in a ship and also in ports without many options of things to do this becomes a great boredom. It was pretty annoying not being able to watch the World Cup final game, because there was any channel showing the game on board. We watched CNN describing the match between a story and another.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Vale citar também a questão de portos e horários no navio: muitas vezes havia mudanças que só descobríamos na hora. Um dia eu fui acordado para receber os fiscais portuários de Messina quando deveríamos estar em Nápoles. Na Grécia onde várias ilhas têm nomes incomuns pra mim, eu algumas vezes descobri apenas no porto que não estava no lugar indicado na escala. Essas mudanças simplesmente não eram informadas, parecendo “Cruzeiro Para Lugar Nenhum”, que são viagens onde os passageiros só descobrem onde estão quando chegam ao porto.

We can also mention the issue of ports and times on the ship: there were often changes that we only discovered at the last minute. One day I was called to attend the custom authorities on port of Messina when we should be docked in Naples. In Greece, where several islands have unusual names for me, sometimes I just discovered that the port was not in the place indicated on the schedule. These changes were simply not informed like "Cruise To Nowhere", which are trips where the passengers just discover where they are when they arrive in port.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Numa dessas surpresas acordei vendo o escape na câmera externa que o navio mostra num dos canais de TV. Infelizmente não consegui entrar no navio, mas revi muitas pessoas nas ruas, inclusive a Paty, e foi muuuuito maravilhoso encontrar alguém amigo naquele momento. Aliás, foi uma longa surpresa, pois ficamos duas noites em Nápoles e no dia anterior ao Escape o Equinox também estava no porto, mas não conseguimos encontrar ninguém conhecido.

In one of those surprises I woke up seeing the Island Escape on the ships' outside camera that is showed in a TV channel. Unfortunately I could not get on the ship but I met many people on the streets, including Paty, and it was sooo awesome to meet some good friend at that time. Indeed, it was a long surprise because we were two nights in Naples and on the day before the Equinox was also in port but we could not find someone that we were friends with.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Foi legal estar em alguns lugares durante a noite, como em Dubrovnik e poder ver a paisagem noturna da cidade velha. O melhor de tudo eram as noites seguidas em Istambul, que só não eram melhores, pois, naquela época os tripulantes tinham de estar sempre a bordo às 2 horas da manha. Mas mesmo assim pude conhecer mais da cidade que se tornou um dos meus lugares favoritos do Mundo.

It was cool to be in some places during the night, as in Dubrovnik and to see the night scenery of the old town. Best of all were the nights in Istanbul, which were not better only because at that time the crew had always to be on board at 2 AM. But even so I discovered more about this city that has become one of my favorite places in the world.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Pra ser sincero fiquei fascinado com as novas cidades que conheci na Turquia e gostaria de poder visitar mais lugares. A vista de Istambul do alto de alguns bares é fascinante e pudemos conhecer várias pessoas amigáveis por lá. Pra mim foi diferente notar os rapazes de um restaurante me olhando com curiosidade e depois me explicarem que eles me acharam parecido com um famoso ator turco. Sinceramente não perguntei o nome da celebridade local, pois certamente eu esqueceria e também não quis arriscar poder ter sido comparado com alguém “estranho”.

To be honest I got fascinated with the new cities that met in Turkey and I would like to visit more places. The view of Istanbul from the top of some bars is amazing and we found many friendly people there. For me it was interesting to note the waiters in a restaurant looking at me with curiosity and then they explain me that I look like a famous Turkish actor. I honestly did not ask the name of the local celebrity, because I certainly would forget it and I didn't want to take the risk of may have been compared with someone "weird."

Antes de terminar vale citar que neste navio pude trabalhar com uma Gerente de área muito legal: a Maria, ela é grega e vinha sempre visitar o navio em Piraeus, com todo o “jeitão” dela, sempre foi muito gentil e amigável conosco. Depois de muita conversa e de mais de 7 meses de contrato pra mim e 11 meses para o Mark recebemos nossas datas de desembarque. O legal foi fazer a passagem da gerência para a Teresa que eu já conhecia da Island Cruises. Pudemos aproveitar uma deliciosa tarde em Istambul e dar boas risadas juntos. Hoje sei por ela que a vida no Aegean Odyssey melhorou muito para os tripulantes devido à mudança de pessoal e melhoria nas facilidades a bordo. Como por exemplo, hoje existe um bar para tripulantes.

Before concluding it is worth mentioning that on this ship I could work with a very nice Area Manager: Maria, she is Greek and used to always visiting the ship in Piraeus, with all the "attitude" she was always very kind and friendly with us.After a lot of conversation and more than seven months of contract for me and 11 months for Mark we got our disembarking dates. The cool thing was to make the management handover to Teresa that I knew from Island Cruises. We were able to enjoy a delightful afternoon in Istanbul and had some good laugh together. Today I know by her that the life in the Aegean Odyssey has improved a lot for the crew due to personnel change and the improving of on board facilities, like having a crew bar.

Por hora é isso!... Será que eu farei um novo contrato?!

Não é a notícia mais agradável de publicar aqui no blog, mas vale para que os tripulantes a bordo tenham noção da importância de tantos treinos e simulações de emergência. O acidente foi noticiado há alguns minutos na televisão brasileira e na internet já existem videos de algumas horas mostrando videos do navio e da evacuação dos ocupantes. Confira alguns links:

It is not the most pleasant news to publish on the blog but it is worth for crew members being aware of the importance of so many drills and trainings. The accident was reported a few minutes ago on Brazilian television and on the Internet have been posted a few hours ago some videos showing the vessel and also the evacuation of occupants. THE BEST CABIN VIEW EVER!!!

O inicio da temporada na Europa foi atribulada devido a erupção do Vulcão na Islândia que fechou vários aeroportos na Europa. Como conseqüência os passageiros a bordo não podiam desembarcar e os que deveriam chegar não conseguiam sair do Reino Unido. Ficamos algumas noites no porto de Heraklion, navegamos com menos da metade de passageiros, parada em alguns portos foram canceladas. Um verdadeiro caos que sempre me trazia problemas inusitados para serem resolvidos.

The beginning of the season in Europe was troubled because of the volcano eruption in Iceland that has closed several airports in Europe. As a result the passengers onboard could not disembark and the new ones were not able to get out of the UK. We stayed a few nights in Heraklion's port, we sailed with less than half of passengers capacity and some ports were canceled. A chaos that brought me several unusual problems to solve.

VENICE, ITALY

Tive até que ajudar a desembarcar mala de passageiro. Mas, o grande problema eram as vendas. Afinal nas lojas quando não atingimos a meta, não ganhamos comissão e a cobrança vem forte. O time mudou e chegaram novas pessoas. Fiquei algumas semanas sem um assistente e foi bem estranho, pois o rapaz que estava quando eu embarquei conhecia bem o navio e muitas vezes agilizava alguns procedimentos.

I even had to help to disembark passenger's luggage. But the big problem was the sales. After all on the stores when we do not reached the target we do not earn commission and the pressure is strong. The team has changed and new people arrived. I spent several weeks without an assistant and it was quite strange because the previous guy knew the ship and often helps me with some procedures.

VENICE, ITALY

A boa notícia veio depois de muita conversa (muita mesma) e somente em cima da hora: o Mark embarcou no Ocean Village. O preço foi bem puxado: ele desembarcou depois de 6 meses no Equinox, voou 24 horas até casa dele, ficou por lá 3 dias e encarou mais um dia de viagens até pegar o navio. E os custos financeiros também foram bancados por nós. A opção era essa ou a incerteza no futuro.

The good news came after a lot of conversation (really a lot) and only at the last minute: Mark embarked on the Ocean Village. The price was well pulled, he disembarked from the Equinox after 6 months and he flew 24 hours to his home, stayed there three days and faced another day travelling to catch the ship. And the financial costs also banked by us. The choice was this or the uncertain future.

VENICE, ITALY

Como falei antes esse não foi o meu momento mais popular e uma das “queixas” era meu sotaque. Enfim esse não vai sumir, mas enfim eu só posso responder que sou capaz de me comunicar em três idiomas. Enquanto certas pessoas falam apenas o Inglês e ainda me soltam pérolas do tipo essa que resolvi dar nome a esse post: “a Ásia é um país?!”. Eu não sou um gênio de geografia e sempre carrego um atlas na mala, mas acho que é mínimo saber quais são os continentes do planeta, principalmente se você quer ser esnobe pelo seu idioma. As I said before it was not my most popular moment onboard and one of the "complaints" was about my accent. Anyway I believe it will never go away but I can only answer that I am able to communicate in three languages. While some people only speak English and “drop pearls" like this that I decided to name this post: "Asia is a country?” I'm not geography’s genius and I have always to carry an atlas with me but I think it is "the minimum" to know what are the continents of the planet, especially if you want to be a snob by your language. (sorry but I had to say that)

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Eu realmente não quero entrar em detalhes, mas pelo que escrevi acima se pode notar que as intrigas ficaram sérias. Pressão, várias mudanças de chefia a bordo, falta de mercadoria, fofocas e por ai vai... Tinha situações do tipo o chefe de hoje queria que eu colocasse cartazes nos vidros, o de amanhã queria que removesse; isso é só um pequeno exemplo do que eu tinha que me ajustar. Em menos de 2 meses foram 4 mudanças de chefes e cada um com seu estilo e jeito de ser.

I really do not want to go into details but from what I wrote above it can be noted that the intrigues got serious. Pressure, several changes of leadership on board, missing merchandise, gossip and so on ... I had situations like the "today boss” wanted that I put posters in the glass windows and "the tomorrow boss" asked me to remove it, that's just one small example of the situation that I had to adjust myself. In less than two months we had four leaders changing and each one with the own style and way of being.

HAGIA SOPHIA, ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Confesso que tentei sair algumas vezes com algumas pessoas da loja, mas simplesmente não dava certo, então eu saia sempre com o Mark, com o Michelli e a Tônia. Ela que inclusive foi minha indicada para assumir a assistência da gerência e me ajudou bastante. Pra ser sincero eu nem descia sempre do navio, pois já conhecia a maioria dos portos. O Michelli é um italiano mega gente boa que trabalhava na engenharia do navio e tinha um jeito divertido de falar tudo com muita sinceridade. O legal era que mesmo trabalhando em departamentos distintos e com nenhum contato durante o trabalho, nossas percepções a respeito da vida no Ocean Village eram bem parecidas.

I confess that I tried to go out a few times with some shop staff but just didn't work, so I used to go out with Mark, Michelle and Tonia. She was the one that I recommended as my assistant and helped me a lot. To be honest I did not leave the ship often because I knew most of the ports. The Italian Michelli is a very cool guy who worked in the engineering of the ship and had a very honest and fun way to say everything. The cool thing was that even working in different departments and with no contact at work, our perceptions about life in Ocean Village were very similar.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Foi muito legal encontrar o navio Azamara Quest em Port Said no Egito, onde estavam a Luciana e a Briony. Como nesse dia o navio chegava bem cedo no porto e só navegava tarde da noite pudemos aproveitar bastante tempo juntos. Basicamente ficamos de um navio para o outro. Além da alegria de encontrar gente amiga elas nos pagaram um delicioso jantar num restaurante do navio delas. Foi um dia maravilhoso. Ainda bem que só abrimos a loja por uma hora e não havia movimento nenhum de passageiros, que haviam passado o dia em excursões para o Cairo. Ainda encontramos mais uma vez a Briony rapidamente em Santorini com ela estavam ainda a Verena e a Nicola.

It was very nice to meet the ship Azamara Quest in Port Said in Egypt where they were on board Luciana and Briony. On that day the ship arrived in port early and sailed only late at night we enjoyed a long time together. Basically we walk from a ship to another. Besides the joy of meeting friendly people, they paid us a delicious dinner in a restaurant in their ship. It was a wonderful day. Thankfully we only opened the store for an hour and there was no movement of passengers who had spent the day on trips to Cairo. We meet Briony once again very quickly in Santorini, Verena and Nicola was also with her.

THE FEW PARTY MOMENTS ON BOARD

Novamente passei a Copa do Mundo a bordo, mas era muito solitário ser o único brasileiro a bordo. Assim como no Escape (onde passei a 1ª Copa em navio) a agitação acontecia nos jogos da Inglaterra por causa dos passageiros. Pelo horário da loja eu via sempre o começo dos jogos na cabine e o final no meu horário de jantar. O legal foi que a maioria dos jogos foi exibida ao vivo no navio e num deles parei pra ver um pedaço no bar de passageiros, era jogo do Brasil e advinha quem acabou com o silêncio gritando gol?! Passei a maior vergonha, me calei e sai de fininho. Os passageiros acharam graça e por sorte não teve nenhuma reclamação. Por conta do trabalho não vi o “nosso” último jogo e fiquei sabendo o resultado no elevador por um indiano. Ainda bem que a Itália também jogou mal, assim o Michelli não pode me zoar.

Once more I was on board during the World Cup but it was very lonely being the only Brazilian in the ship. The same as happened on Escape (where I spent the first World Cup in a ship) the excitement happening in the England games because of the passengers. Due to the stores opening time I always saw the beginning of the games in the cabin and the end in my dinner break. The cool thing was that most games were shown live on the ship and in one of the Brazilian games I stopped in one of the passengers’ bar to watch some minutes and guess who broke the silence screaming goal?! I felt one of the greatest shames of my life so I shut up and sneak out. The passengers laughed and luckily I had no complaint. Because of the work I did not watch "our" last game and I heard the result in the elevator by an Indian guy. It was a good thing for me that Italy also played badly so Michelli can not make fun of me.

MEETING LUCIANA & BRIONY: AMAZING DAY IN

EGYPT!!!

A escala do Ocean Village não era boa para os negócios, pois o navio passava a maior parte do tempo nos portos, mas era muito bom para conhecer as cidades (quando eu saia). Comparado com outros navios era um paraíso: cruzeiros de 1 semana, com 1 dia de mar e saindo dos portos quase sempre depois das cinco horas da tarde. E acreditem que eu ouvia “pencas” de reclamação de alguns funcionários por causa do trabalho.

The schedule of the Ocean Village was not good for business, as the ship spent much time in port but it was very good to see the ports (when I leave the ship). Compared with other ships was like heaven: 1 week cruises with one sea day only and sailing often after five o'clock in the afternoon. Even being like this, believe me I heard "bunches" of complaints from some shoppies because of the work.

SANTORINI, GREECE

Conheci alguns portos novos como: Limassol (Cyprus), Korcula (Croácia), Port Said (Egito) e a famosa, mas decepcionante, ilha de Lesbos (Mytilene) e Corfu ambos na Grécia. Na Turquia a novidade foi o delicioso porto de Marmaris, infelizmente fizemos apenas uma parada por lá. Foi maravilhoso ainda repetir Istanbul e me apaixonei mais ainda pela cidade. Tendo o Mark como companhia nos portos, ganhei uns kilos a mais, pois sempre saíamos pra comer e quando juntava o Michelli era uma farra gastronômica, como quando fomos comer frutos do mar em Kusadasi. Por isso os visíveis “quilinhos” a mais.

I visited some new ports such as Limassol (Cyprus), Korcula (Croatia), Port Said (Egypt) and the famous but disappointing Lesbos Island (Mytilene) and Corfu both in Greece. In Turkey the novelty was the delightful port of Marmaris, unfortunately we just stop once on there. Istanbul was wonderful again and I fell in love even more to the city. Having Mark as a company in the ports I got some more pounds because we always went out to eat and when Michelle was together it was a gastronomic feast like when we went to eat seafood in Kusadasi. Therefore the apparent "extra pounds".

DUBROVNIK & KORCULA: CROATIA

A surpresa veio de ultima hora: a transferência pro Aegean Odyssey, um navio que nos nunca tínhamos ouvido falar e não havia nenhuma informação. A explicação foi que era “muito necessário” dois homens e seriamos apenas nós trabalhando na loja de lá. Então em Civitavecchia desembarcamos do navio com a frustração de perder o melhor do itinerário que começaria em alguns dias. Vale registrar que o Ocean Village foi vendido para outra Cia e hoje navega com o nome de Pacif Jewel.

The surprise came last minute: the transfer pro Aegean Odyssey, a ship that we had never heard and we had no information. The explanation was that it was "very necessary" two men and we would be just us working in the store there. Then we disembarked the ship in Civitavecchia with the frustration of losing the better route that would start in a few days. It is worth to mention that Ocean Village was sold to another CIA and now sails under the name Jewel Pacif.

MY CABIN ON THE OCEAN VILLAGE

Eu já pensei diferentes maneiras de relatar meu contrato no Ocean Village. Foi uma experiência intensa e que vivenciei algumas situações que eu só acreditava existir na ficção. Nesse blog eu sempre relato o melhor das minhas experiências e as dificuldades eu tento contar de uma forma leve e descontraída. Mas, dessa vez acho que isso não será possível. Afinal como eu era o chefe a responsabilidade por todas as conseqüências é minha: as boas e ruins. Além de não ser ético trazer certas situações para este espaço pessoal. Eu pensava que seria um contrato fácil, mas não foi.

I've already thought many different ways to report my contract at Ocean Village. It was an intense period and I experienced a few situations that I believed would exist only in the fiction. In this blog I always reported the best of my experiences and the difficult moments I tried to tell in a light and relaxed way. But this time I think it will not be possible. After all as I was the chief and the responsibility for any consequences were mine: the good and the bad ones. Besides would not be ethical to report certain situations on this personal space. I thought it would be an easier contract but it was not.

GRENADA

Trabalhar a bordo em meio a diversas culturas é sempre um desafio para a sociabilidade e sempre havia sido bem sucedido nos navios anteriores. A experiência no Ocean Village foi contrária e o resultado é que depois do meu contrato eu tenho menos de cinco pessoas que conheci nesse navio na minha lista no Facebook. Claro que eu já sabia da política hierárquica e não esperava viver um conto de fadas, mas, eu nunca imaginei tanta intriga “por pouca coisa”.

Working on board in the middle of different cultures is always a challenge for sociability and I had always been successful in the previous ships. The experience at Ocean Village is opposite and the result is that after my contract I have less than five people that I met on this ship as friend on my Facebook's list. Of course I already knew the hierarchical political and I was not expecting to live a fairy tale but I never imagined to live so much intrigue "for so little things."

BARBADOS

Fui chamado pra embarcar no Ocean Village na metade do meu período de férias desejado e sem conseguir descansar o quanto eu gostaria, afinal a gerente de lá havia sido demitida repentinamente. Além, da dificuldade de só me comunicar com o Mark pela internet ainda tive um falecimento na família (que drama, né?!) o que não era parte das férias dos meus sonhos. Mas achei uma boa proposta profissional e me foi garantido que o Mark poderia embarcar naquele navio no futuro.

I was called to join the Ocean Village in the middle of my desired vacation time and I was not able to relax as much as I would, it as a emergency situation for the company: the manager there was suddenly fired. In this short vacation I had to deal with the difficulty to communicate with Mark by the Internet and I had a death in the family (such a drama time). That was not the vacation of my dreams. But I believed it was a good professional proposal and I had been confirmed that Mark would embark on that ship in the future.

BARBADOS: 1st TIME WITH MARK

Foram mais de 24 horas de vôos até chegar a Grenada no Caribe, sendo que o último avião que peguei em San Juan era de um modelo bem antigo e confesso um pouco assustador. A tripulação do Ocean Village não tinha tantas nacionalidades se comparado com outros navios: no hotel a predominância era de filipinos, indianos e indonésios; entre os staffs a maioria era de britânicos e entre os oficiais havia italianos, britânicos e búlgaros. Latinos eram os acrobatas colombianos com quem eu tinha pouco contato e assim como na Saga Rose eu era o único brasileiro do navio. Depois de algum tempo descobri o Paulo de Portugal, que trabalhava no Departamento de Engenharia e eu encontrava esporadicamente pelo navio e conseguia conversar por alguns minutos em português.

It was more than 24 hours flight to get to Grenada in the Caribbean, and the last flight that I took in San Juan it was in a very old airplane model and I confess I was a little scary. The crew of the Ocean Village did not have so many nationalities compared to other ships: the hotel was the predominance of Filipinos, Indians and Indonesians, between the staffs mostly British and among the officers were Italian, British and Bulgarian. Latinos were only the acrobats from Colombia, with whom I used to have very few contact and as on the Saga Rose I was the only Brazilian onboard. After some time I discovered Paulo from Portugal, who worked in the Engineer Department and occasionally we meet around the ship and talk Portuguese for a few minutes.

BARBADOS: 2nd TIME WITH MARK

Minha rotina passou a ser da loja pra cabine e saindo apenas algumas vezes nos diferentes portos caribenhos. Eu passava pelo crew bar quase todas as noites pra comprar Coca- Cola, mas estava quase sempre vazio. Vale ressaltar que a minha cabine no Ocean Village foi a melhor que tive em todos os meus contratos até hoje: grande, no deck 12 e com uma janela enorme. Era um excelente privilégio e só seria melhor se tivesse internet na cabine, mas era tão boa que eu me sentia nas nuvens.

My routine has become going to from the store to my cabin and I went out only a few times in the Caribbean ports. I went to the crew bar almost every night to buy some Coke but was always very quiet. It is worth mentioning that my cabin on Ocean Village was the best I had in all my contracts: large, on the deck 12 and with a huge window. It was a great privilege and would only be better if it had internet in the cabin, but it was so good that I was feeling "in the clouds".

ST. MARTEEN

Os negócios fluíram muito bem durante a temporada caribenha e foi um período bacana. Confesso que foi muito ruim não ter uma passagem de gerencia por outra pessoa, e havia sempre algo pra fazer que eu acabava descobrindo perto dos prazos. Assim tive de me virar e apreender os procedimentos específicos do navio e quem eram as pessoas por conta própria. Mas, eu puxava o time e cheguei até a manter as lojas abertas por 2 horas além do tempo normal, mas atingimos nossa meta.

The business flowed very well during the Caribbean season and was a very cool period. I confess that it was very hard not having a manager handover, so there was always something to do that I had just discovered near teh deadline. So I had to learn by my own most of the specific ship's procedures and also who were the people and their positions. But I pulled the team and once I keep the stores open for two hours beyond the normal time, but we achieved our target.

TOBAGO

Tive alguns dias legais em Barbados, no famoso entre tripulantes, bar The Boatyard a beira do mar caribenho. A água é clara como de piscina e é sempre muito quente por lá. Outro lugar que adorei foi a “praia dos aviões” em St Marteen. As aeronaves passam praticamente “nas nossas cabeças” antes de aterrissarem no aeroporto que fica a metros do mar. O navio ia também para outras ilhas que o Equinox não visitava, mas não me lembro de nada ter chamado muito a minha atenção. Muitas vezes saia também para comer no Subway ou no KFC.

I had some cool days in Barbados in the famous among the crew: The Boatyard Bar just on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. The water is as clear as a pool and is always very hot down there. Another place I loved was the "The Aircraft Beach" in St Maarten. The aircraft are pretty much "in our heads" before landing at the airport which is meters from the sea. The ship docked also to other islands not visited by the Equinox but honestly I do not remember something else that called my attention. Often also I went out to eat at Subway or KFC.

ST KITTS

Foi em Barbados também que por duas vezes atracamos juntos com o Equinox e pude rever o Mark; foram momentos bem legais, mas além da hora da despedida foi chato também ter de aturar o que apenas chamarei aqui de “ALMA PEQUENA DE OUTRAS PESSOAS”. E ponto final. Foi ainda nesse porto que encontrei amigos da Island Cruises: o James e o Nick (foto), depois de alguns contratos torna-se comum encontrar amigos nos portos.

In Barbados also we docked twice docked together with the Equinox and I meet Mark, were really nice moments but apart from the departure time was also annoying to have to put up with "something" than I will just call here "THE LITTLE SOUL OF OTHER PEOPLE." And that is all I will mention. I also meet in there some friends from Island Cruises: James and Nick (picture), after some contracts it is very common to find friends in ports.

ISLA MARGHERITA, VENEZUELA

A travessia para a Europa foi boa para os negócios e novamente organizei um esquema legal e todos puderam aproveitar uma boa escala de trabalho nas lojas. Antes de chegarmos a Heraklion, na Grécia, que seria o porto de embarque; paramos em Madeira (que eu não pude descer), Pallermo (Itália) e Almeria (Espanha). Nesses dois últimos tive momentos divertidos com algumas das pessoas que eu sempre saia de vez em quando.

The crossing to Europe was good for business again and I arranged a nice schedule and all the shoppies could enjoy a good time off. Before arriving in Heraklion, Greece, which would be the embarkation port, we stopped at Madeira (I could not go out), Pallermo (Italy) and Almeria (Spain). These last two ports I had some fun times with the people that I always get off once in a while.

ALMERIA, SPAIN

Em Almeria, um novo porto espanhol na minha lista de visitados fomos a um restaurante italiano com 2 tripulantes nativos do país, eles disseram que a comida era boa, mas ressaltaram que seria melhor na Itália. Em Pallermo fomos comer novamente e tendo um italiano como companhia tudo ficou mais fácil e tivemos direito a tudo no capricho. Ainda nesse porto encontrei rapidamente o Neco (foto) do Island Star que estava num dos navios da Costa; foi muito bom rever um rosto amigo e pode conversar um pouco em português.

In Almeria, a new Spanish port on my "visited list" we went to an Italian restaurant with two crew members native from the "country of the boot," they said the food was good but it would be better in Italy. In Pallermo we eat again, and having an Italian company was easier and we had "the right to everything at whim". Although quickly I meet with Neco (photo) from Island Star who was onboard one of the Costa's ships, it was great to see a friendly face and can talk a little in Portuguese.

ALMERIA, SPAIN

* “O cruzeiro para as pessoas que não fazem cruzeiros” era o lema da Cia que oferecia serviço informal para os seus passageiros. Em alguns aspectos lembrava a Island Cruises, só não tinha a mesma galera.

GREAT PEOPLE, GREAT MEMORIES!

E ai galera td bem? Espero q sim...
What's Up? I hope you are ok...

Por favor, me desculpem, mas na época devido ao trabalho não dava tempo pra me dedicar ao blog como antes e esse espaço ficou parado. Eu desembarquei do Equinox em Janeiro de 2010, mas só agora venho contar isso aqui. Tem sido diferente contar essas histórias que aconteceram há mais de um ano, mas esta sendo bom pra refletir sobre elas e realmente ter certeza de que foi um dos momentos mais intensos da vida a bordo e muitas vezes até sinto saudades. Tenho ainda mais algumas histórias “passadas” do Ocean Village e do Aegean Odyssey; por hora meus últimos dias no Celebrity Equinox.

Please forgive me, but at that time due to the work I didn’t give the properly attention to this blog as before . I disembarked from the Equinox on January 2010 but only now I am writing about it on here. Has been weird telling these stories that happened over a year but it's being good to reflect about and being sure that it was one of the most intense moments of my life on board and many times I miss it. I still have some more "passed" stories on the Ocean Village and on the Aegean Odyssey. For the moment: my last days on board the Celebrity Equinox.

ROATAM, HONDURAS

O fim de contrato no Equinox foi muito intenso para mim; dois sonhos se tornaram realidade: ser gerente e estar com alguém a bordo. As conseqüências dessas realizações nem sempre foram gratificantes, mas eu tinha em mente que tudo aquilo eram desejos meus atendidos, ou melhor, metas atingidas.

The ending of contract on Equinox was very intense for me, two dreams had come true: being a manager and having someone with me on board. The consequences of these achievements were not always that good but I had on mind that were my desires happening or even better the goals achieved.

ROATAM, HONDURAS

A travessia foi cansativa para todos nós na loja, mesmo com as noites de folgas que organizei pro time. Assim que chegamos em Fort Lauderdale tivemos uma bateria de inspeções e visitas: pessoal da Celebrity, da Harding Brothers, convidados e autoridades americanas. E na seqüência fizemos um mini cruzeiro, que mesmo com um dia maravilhoso numa praia caribenha deixou a todos muito cansados. Pra ter uma idéia:

e o cruzeiro seguinte começou com mais 2 dias de mar. Atualmente eu sei que não é mais assim, mas naquela época no dia de mar as lojas abriam das 9: 00 as 00:00hs

The crossing was tiring for everyone in the store, even with the nights off that I organized for the team. Once the ship arrived in Fort Lauderdale we had a battery of inspections and visits: the Celebrity’s staff, Harding Brothers’ person, guests and American authorities. On the sequence we made a mini cruise, that even with a wonderful day on a Caribbean beach left all of us very tired. To get an idea:
6 days at sea for the crossing
+ Fort Lauderdale
+ day at sea
+Cozumel
+ day at sea
+ Fort Lauderdale;
and the following cruise started with 2 more days at sea. I know it is not like this anymore but at that time the stores’ opening time was from 9am until Midnight.

COZUMEL, MEXICO

Então por mais legal e compreensivo que eu tenha sido houve vários problemas com funcionário: gente chorando, ficando doente, pedindo demissão, e várias reclamações pelo excesso de trabalho. Eu já esperava por alguns desses desafios, mas não com tanta intensidade. Enfim, eu encarei todas essas situações e ganhei uma excelente experiência.

So, even being comprehensive and nice with the team, I had several staff problems: people crying, getting sick, quitting, and many complaints by overwork. I expected some of these challenges, but not with such intensity. Anyway, I faced all these situations and gained a great experience.

MARK'S BIRTHDAY

As minhas idas ao crew bar diminuíram cada vez mais e no tempo livre eu priorizava o descanso. O Natal foi bem diferente dos demais que passei a bordo: tivemos embarque no dia 24 de dezembro e a comemoração só veio dias depois. O Ano Novo foi mais animado e o pessoal da loja aproveitou bastante na área da piscina com os passageiros. Eu fui cedo pra cama.

My trips to the crew bar decreased more and the free time I gave priority to the rest. Christmas was very different from the others that I spent on board: we embarkation on the December 24th and the celebration came only days later. The New Year’s Eve was more animated and the shop staff had a good time in the pool area with the passengers. I went to bed really early.

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

A gerente que ficaria no meu lugar chegou e eu tive de fazer todo o treinamento dela, pois ela era nova na companhia. A tripulação em geral já não era mais a mesma e havia poucas pessoas da abertura do navio.

The replacing manager arrived and I had to do all the her training and handover because she was a new hire of the company. The crew in general was no longer the same and there were just a few people from the ship’s set up.

CRISTOBAL PIER, PANAMA

Conhecer o Caribe foi legal, mas confesso que não achei tão excitante quanto eu esperava. As praias são lindas e maravilhosas, mas todas longe dos portos, e pra chegar até elas somente de táxi, nem sempre com preços razoáveis. No mais, não há muitos opções do que fazer. Devido ao trabalho eu não conseguia ir às excursões, por isso não tenho fotos com golfinhos, entre outras que vejo de alguns amigos no Facebook.

Knowing the Caribbean was cool, but I did not find as exciting as I expected. The beaches are beautiful and wonderful, but far from most of the ports and to reach them only by taxi not always reasonably priced. Apart from going to the beach there are not many options of what to do. Due to work I could not go on the tours, so I have no photos with dolphins, among other things that I saw the pictures on some friends’ Facebook profile.

ST. MARTEEN

Confesso que adorei Cozumel, no México e Roatam, em Honduras: foram os dois lugares que mais me diverti e também achei lindo. E o melhor de tudo com preços razoáveis; por exemplo: paguei US$ 20,00 por drink nas ilhas Caymans, cerca de 4 vezes mais se comparado com Roatam. Outro lugar bem interessante foi Cartagena, na Colômbia, onde comer foi uma das melhores experiências que já tive. No menu: lagosta, camarão, um enorme e delicioso peixe, cerveja deliciosa (Clube Colômbia) e o serviço simples, mas maravilhoso e por um preço mega legal.

I confess that I loved Cozumel in Mexico and Roatam in Honduras: for me the two most beautiful places that visited on the Caribbean and also the ones that I had great time off. The best of all: with reasonable prices, for example: I paid US$ 20.00 per drink in the Cayman Islands, about four times more compared to Roatam. Another interesting place was Cartagena in Colombia, where to eat was one of the best experiences I ever had. On the menu: lobster, shrimp, a huge and delicious cooked fish, great beer (Club Colombia) and the simple but wonderful service at a very good price.

ST. KITTS

St. Marteen é um verdadeiro paraíso para comprar eletrônicos: muitas opções por um ótimo preço. Vale a pena dar uma sondada antes, mas as lojas ficam quase todas na mesma área. Eu ouvi muito das boas possibilidades de compra em Fort Lauderdale, mas esse é um porto que só consegui descer uma vez e por poucas horas.

St. Maarten is a paradise for buying electronics: many options for a great price. I suggest check different shops before but they are all almost in the same area. I heard a lot of good buying opportunities in Fort Lauderdale but this is a port that I only had the chance to go out once and just for a few hours.

BELIZE

Meu aniversário foi bem chato e se comparado com outros em que estive a bordo o menos animado. Mas, o aniversário do Mark foi exatamente na minha última semana a bordo e fizemos uma baita comemoração. Como tínhamos direito a folga de aniversário (essa era uma regra do nosso time, nem sempre isso existe a bordo) pudemos conhecer o Murano que para muitos é o melhor restaurante a bordo: comida maravilhosa e serviço perfeito. Vale ressaltar também o ambiente. E na mesma noite tivemos uma crew party no deck aberto.

My birthday was pretty boring and nothing excited compared to others that I had on board. But Mark's birthday was on my last week on board and we made a “hell” of a celebration. As we had birthday off right (this was a deal of our team, it is not a rule board) we went to the Murano witch is considered the best restaurant on board: wonderful food and perfect service. It is worth mentioning also the environment. At that night we had also a crew party on the open deck.

CREW BAR N' PARTIES

Mesmo com muita gente torcendo a favor nessa noite eu pude ter a sensação do preconceito enrrustido. Declarado apenas nos olhares, é muito difícil de ser comprovado, mas ele é bem presente e forte. Naquela noite os olhares foram o único sinal, mas depois eu tive certeza de que eu estava certo.

Even with many people hoping for me and Mark at that night I felt the covered prejudice of some people. Declared only on the way that some people looked at us, it is very difficult to prove but it was present and very strong. At that evening the looks were the only sign but after all I had the proof that I was right about it.

SHOPPIES WORKING

O dia do meu desembarque chegou e foi repleto de emoções. Foi bem difícil pelas razões pessoais, mas era realmente hora de eu descansar. Passar pela gangway naquela situação foi uma das piores sensações que já tive e como num vídeo clipe eu vi passar na mente milhares de imagens daquele contrato. Mesmo com vários “problemas”, realmente valeu! Inaugurar esse navio foi uma das coisas mais legais que fiz na minha vida, eu sempre terei um enorme carinho pelo Equinox e muitas histórias boas pra contar.

My disembark day came and was filled of emotions. It was really difficult for the personal reasons but in other hands was really my necessary time to rest. Skip the gangway on that situation was one of the worst feelings I ever had and as a video clip I saw go in mind thousands of pictures of that contract. Even with many problems “it really worth!”. Inaugurating the ship was one of the coolest things I've done in my life, I always will have huge affection for the Equinox and many good stories to tell.

Esse e o post que eu tenho que falar da minha vida pessoal, não que isso seja algo que me agrade, mas não tenho como pular essa parte da minha experiência a bordo. A intenção desse blog nunca foi de fazer militância, mas quem me conhece sabe que eu não faço questão nenhuma de esconder quem eu sou. E pra quem esta pensando em embarcar na vida de tripulante vale o aviso: não da pra carregar preconceitos na bagagem. Alem da diversidade na tripulação com quem trabalhamos existe ainda vários passageiros de diferentes nacionalidades, religiões, sexualidades, costumes, etc. Atualmente muitas companhias têm promovido vários cruzeiros temáticos, o que pode lhe fazer ter de servir determinado grupo de pessoas (que talvez você não goste).

This is the post in which I have to talk about my personal life, not that this is something that pleases me, but I cannot skip this part of my experience on board. The intention of this blog was never to do activism, but who knows me knows that I do not hide no matter who I am. And for those thinking about embarking on this “crew” life, here’s the warning: do not carry any prejudice on you. Besides the diversity among the crew who we work with, there are still several passengers from different nationalities, religions, sexualities, customs, etc. Currently many companies have promoted several theme cruises that can make you serve a certain group of people (who you may not like).

HALLOWEEN CREW PARTY

No fim da temporada no Mediterrâneo algumas surpresas aconteceram: na manha de embarque do ultimo cruzeiro fui encarregado de recepcionar o novo tripulante das lojas. Era um sul africano chamado Mark. Fiz meu trabalho como de costume: mostrei o navio pra ele e expliquei um pouco de como as coisas funcionavam, ja que era o primeiro contrato dele. Apresentei-o pra outros tripulantes e deixei-o na cabine dele. Nos dias seguintes meu contato com ele era basicamente na loja ou um simples oi no crew bar.

At the end of the Med season there were some surprises: in the morning of the departure of the last cruise I was commissioned to welcome the new crew to the team. It was a South African named Mark. I did my job as usual and I showed him the ship and explained a bit about how things worked, as it was his first contract. I introduced him to other crew members and left him in his cabin. In the following days my contact with him was basically at the shop or a simple hi in the crew bar.

ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

Desde que o Mark chegou a bordo um dos vendedores demonstrou bastante interesse por ele a ponto de me bombardear de perguntas após o embarque dele. Desconversei e disse apenas que não estive com ele tanto tempo assim. A verdade e que esse rapaz descobriu mais sobre o Mark e “espalhou” tudo entre algumas pessoas da tripulação. Confesso que nada disso me afetou porque eu continuava vendo-o muito pouco e não tinha nenhuma segunda intenção.

Since Mark came on board one of the vendors showed a great interest in him asking me lots of questions right after his embarkation. I pretended I didn’t get it and said that I just didn’t spend that much time with him. The truth is that this guy found out more about Mark and "spread" to some of the crew. I confess that none of this affected me because I kept seeing him very little and had no second thoughts.

Em certa noite no crew bar, depois de muita festa e alguns drinks, não sabemos ao certo como tudo rolou, mas eu fiquei com o Mark e praticamente começamos a namorar. Era bem legal ter alguém no navio, mesmo sentindo que algumas pessoas não gostavam muito “daquilo”. E verdade que no Equinox com o grande numero de tripulantes eu pude me divertir um pouquinho antes, mas nada serio ate então.

At the crew bar in one night, after much celebration and a few drinks, we're not sure how it happened, but I stayed with Mark and we basically just started dating. It was nice to have someone on the ship, while they feel that some people did not really like "that". It is true that the Equinox with the large number of crew I could enjoy myself a little bit before, but nothing serious until then.

CREW BAR

O trabalho no Equinox continuou sempre puxado e as festinhas ajudavam a relaxar, mas as mudanças na tripulação continuaram. A Liv foi transferida pra outro navio como gerente e eu fiquei cotado pra cobrir a gerencia, já que o Mornay estava perto do fim do contrato dele. Mas os dias passavam, nenhuma resposta vinha e meu contrato também estava perto do fim. Depois de muita incerteza chegou a noticia de que eu seria promovido a gerente das lojas e ficaria a bordo ate a metade de Janeiro e o outro assistente que chegou (e estava em treinamento) seria promovido a gerente do Solstice. Fiquei empolgado e ansioso pela responsabilidade de ser o segundo gerente de um dos mais novos e modernos navios do mundo, naquele momento.

The hard work at the Equinox carried on as usual and the parties always helped to relax, but changes in the crew continued. Liv was transferred to another vessel as a manager and I was quoted to cover the management, because Mornay was near the end of his contract. But the days passed, there was no feedback came and my contract was nearing its end. After some uncertainty, the news that I was promoted to manager of the stores came up and I would have to stay on board until mid-January and the other assistant who arrived (who was in training) would be promoted to manager of Solstice. I was excited and eager for responsibility of being the second manager of one of the newest and most modern ships in the world at that moment.

CREW PARTY

Devido as responsabilidades e ao cansaço eu diminui bastante minhas idas ao crew bar; o trabalho aumentou e o telefone passou a tocar cada vez mais e muitas vezes eu era acordado bem cedo pra alguma reunião de ultima hora. Sem falar que a cabine de gerente era muito boa e agora eu tinha sempre companhia (algumas semanas antes eu já havia mudado pra uma cabine maior, mas dessa vez foi uma mudança muito melhor). A tripulação também ja não era a mesma e a galera que estava desde a abertura do navio começava a se mostrar cansada pra tanta festa. Mesmo assim houve festas bem legais como o Dia das Bruxas em um dos bares pra passageiros (reservado só para a tripulação).

Due to the fatigue and the responsibilities my visits to the crew bar decreased considerably, the work had increased and the phone started to ring more often and I was awake early for some last-minute meeting. Not to mention that the cabin manager was very good and I always had company (a few weeks before I had changed to a larger cabin, but this time the change was much better). The crew also was not the same and the guys that were from the opening team were quite tired as well. Yet, there were really cool parties like Halloween in one of the guest bars (reserved for the crew only).

BARCELONA, SPAIN

O cansaço começou a apertar, mas o trabalho e a nova responsabilidade não me permitiam relaxar. O bom foi que antes do Mornay desembarcar ele me deu uma folga e eu descansei um pouco, mas assim que ele desembarcou muita coisa mudou pra mim no trabalho. Felizmente muitas pessoas confirmaram a amizade e fizeram muito pra ajudar, outras pelo contrario mudaram totalmente comigo e atormentaram tudo que foi possível. Eu tive uma semana pra bombardear meu antigo gerente de perguntas e ele me disse algo que marcou muito: “gerenciar o negocio e fácil, difícil e gerenciar as pessoas”.

Antes dos seis dias de mar seguidos rumo ao Caribe pude ter bons momentos em Napoles, Ilhas Canárias, Cartagena e Barcelona. O Mark passou a ser companhia constante nos portos. A travessia foi repleta de trabalho e preparativos para as varias inspeções que aconteceriam na chegada aos Estados Unidos e para as mudanças necessárias para a temporada no Caribe. Confesso que em vários momentos senti muita falta de pessoas que estavam a bordo antes e com quem o entrosamento facilitava muito o trabalho.

Before the six consecutive days at sea towards the Caribbean I could have a good time in Naples, Canary Islands, Cartagena and Barcelona. Mark became a constant companion in ports. The crossing was full of work and preparations for the various inspections that take place upon arrival in the United States and for the necessary changes for the Caribbean Season. I have to confess that I missed many people who were onboard before and that definitely would make work a lot easier.

A rotina de trabalho do Equinox foi sempre bem puxada, afinal auxiliar o gerente no comando de “grandes números” requeria muita dedicação. O telefone celular que eu tinha a bordo tocava sempre em diferentes horários e quase sempre com pedidos que me levassem ao trabalho. A minha minúscula cabine alem de quente ainda me proporcionava dividir um muito pequeno banheiro; Jack que morava em outra minuscula cabine era o meu colega de banheiro e graças a Deus sempre nos entendemos bem. A recompensa por tanto trabalho era o entrosamento da galera e toda a diversão que tínhamos quanto estávamos juntos

The Equinox work routine was always quite hard, as helping the manager in charge of "considerable numbers" required a lot of dedication. The cell phone I had onboard used to play at different times and often with requests that would take me to work. My tiny cabin in addition to heat forced me to share a very small bathroom as well, Jack who was living in another tiny cabin was my bathroom mate and thanks to God we always got along well. The reward for work that much was the team bond and all the fun we used to have when we were together.

CELEBRITY SOLSTICE AND CELEBRITY EQUINOX IN KUSADASI, TURKEY

Com o passar do tempo às afinidades definiram os grupinhos, mas o time da loja manteve uma boa parcela de assíduos freqüentadores do crew bar e crew parties. Era bem legal ver um grande time da loja, com mais de 10 diferentes nacionalidades tendo um bom entrosamento. E claro que havia divergências e nem tudo era alegria, mas era um bom time e conseguimos fazer coisas bem legais juntos, como o dia no parque aquático de Kusadasi, na Turquia. O grande numero de tripulantes e o tamanho do navio não ajudava muito na questão de conhecer pessoas de outros departamentos, mas mesmo assim consegui conhecer muita gente legal.

Over time the affinities defined the groups, but the shop team kept a good portion of faithful patrons of the crew bar and crew parties. It was nice to see a large team, with over 10 different nationalities having a good relationship. Of course there were disagreements and it was not all joy, but it was a good team and we managed to do cool stuff together, like the day at Water Park in Kusadasi, Turkey. The large number of crew and vessel size did not help much meeting people from other departments, but I still managed to meet many nice people.

WITH EHAB AND BARBARA IN ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

Devido ao trabalho de porto eu não pude descer em Oslo e confesso que fiquei bem chateado quando vi o navio deixando o porto, pois o lugar parece lindo. A gente fazia embarque de passageiros em Civitavecchia, na Itália, mas esse era um dia que nenhum de nos da loja conseguíamos sair por mais de 2 horas. O maximo que dava tempo era pra ir ate a cidade comer algo e voltar. Ainda bem que esse foi um porto que aproveitei bem nos meus contratos anteriores. O lado bom era que só tínhamos IPM (in port maning) nos portos de over night e a minha posição me dava o privilegio de ser excluído.

Due to work I could not get off in Oslo and I confess that I was quite upset when I saw the ship leaving the port, because the place looks gorgeous. The boarding was in Civitavecchia, Italy, and it was a day none of us could leave the store for more than two hours. The maximum we could do was to go downtown to eat something and come back. I am thankful this was a port of call in which I got to know well on my previous contracts. The good thing was we only had IPM (In Port Maning) whenever there was an overnight and my position gave me the privilege of being skipped of it.

WITH EHAB IN ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

O cruzeiro inaugural do Equinox foi pela costa da Noruega e a temporada no Mediterrâneo era basicamente entre Itália, Grécia, Turquia e dois paises que não havia visitado antes: Egito e Israel. Confesso que gostei bastante desse itinerário, mas morria de saudades do itinerário da Island Cruises que a gente estava sempre na Espanha e na Franca. O único refresco foi uma parada em Barcelona e Cartagena no inicio e fim da temporada. Ainda tivemos uma parada em Lisboa e novamente o Leandro foi mega amigo e me ajudou a fazer varias coisas necessárias como comprar novas lentes de contato e comer comida brasileira.

The inaugural cruise of the Equinox was through the coast of Norway and the Mediterranean season was basically between the Italy, Greece, Turkey, and two countries that had not visited before: Egypt and Israel. I confess that I really like that route, but missed quite a lot Island Cruises itinerary, where we were always in Spain and France. The only refreshment was stop in Cartagena and Barcelona at the beginning and end of the season. We also had a stop in Lisbon and Leandro was again a mega friend and helped me make several things such as buying new contact lenses and eating Brazilian food.

CAIRO, EGYPT

Na Grécia houve um dia que o navio so saiu de Santorini quando já era noite e pude ver o fantástico por do sol do alto da montanha. Numa das escalas seguintes foi legal reencontrar o Ailton, subir com ele e fazer a descida da montanha montado no burrinho.
O navio so fez uma escala em Mykonos e a lenda diz que o capitão grego decidiu que o novo navio dele atracaria no porto ao invés de fazermos operacao de tender, pois havia outros grandes navios que também tinham escala por la nesse dia. Saímos de Kusadasi no final do dia e a exatamente a meia-noite estávamos ancorando na famosa ilha grega. Nem preciso dizer que foi festa entre a tripulação.

In Greece there was a day that the ship left Santorini when it was night and I could see the fantastic sunset from the mountain. In one of the following scales it was nice to meet Ailton, catch up with him and go down the mountain mounted on a donkey. The ship only made one stopover in Mykonos and the legend says that the Greek captain decided that his new ship would berth at the port instead of having tender operation because there were other large vessels there as well. We left Kusadasi at the end of the day and exactly at midnight we were anchoring in the famous Greek island. Needless to say that it sounded like party to the entire crew.

ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT VISITING THE VISION OF THE SEAS

Era começo de outubro, já estava frio em Mykonos e a ilha não estava cheia como costuma estar na alta temporada, mas foi um dos overnights mais divertidos da minha vida a bordo. Somente voltei pro navio às 8 horas da manha, dormi e ainda pude sair pela tarde afinal o navio só navegou a noite. Na turquia o único porto era Kusadasi, mas era ótimo para comer, fazer compras, ir no Mama Mia (bar de um ex- tripulante turco), usar internet e ate mesmo ir na praia. Em duas dessas paradas foi bem legal encontrar o Celebrity Solsitice e poder ver as semelhanças entre os navios. Teve um grupo de shoppies que se divertiu bastante, pois já haviam trabalhado na abertura do Solstice.

It was early October, it was already cold in Mykonos and the island was not as full as it usually is during the high season, but it was one of the funniest overnights of my life on board. Just got back to the ship at 8 o'clock in the morning, then I slept and I could still get off the ship in the afternoon because she set sail only at night. In Turkey, Kusadasi was the only port, but it was great to eat, shop, go to Mama Mia (a former Turkish crewmember Bar), use internet and even go to the beach. In two of those stops it was nice to have Celebrity Solstice with us and see the similarities between the vessels. There was a group of shoppies that had lots of fun, because they had already worked on the opening of the Solstice.

ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT VISITING THE VISION OF THE SEAS

No Egito o legal era o overnight que proporciona praticamente 2 dias de descanso na escala. Ir ver as pirâmides no Cairo foi algo que so fiz uma vez já que a viagem de Alexandria durava quase 3 horas de ida e mais 3 horas de volta no ônibus. Entre a tripulação foi quando começamos a ter as famosas crew parties no deck 16, o deck aberto no alto do navio, então praticamente ninguém saia à noite nesse porto. Mas foi em Alexandria que tive o maior numero de encontros com tripulantes da Island Cruises. Essa a cidade que o Ehab vive, ele foi mega legal e por duas vezes me levou pra conhecer vários lugares da cidade. Com direito a uma bela degustação de comidas típicas árabes.

In Egypt, the overnight was nice because it provided basically two days of rest. Seeing the pyramids in Cairo was something that I’ve done only once since the trip to Alexandria lasted almost three hours to go and another 3 hours to return by bus. This was also the time when we started having the famous crew parties on the deck 16, the open deck on the top of the ship, then basically nobody used to leave the ship in the evening. But it was in Alexandria where I had the greatest number of meetings with the crewmembers from Island Cruises. That is the city where Ehab lives. He was mega cool and went sightseeing with me throughout the city twice. Of course there was tasting of typical Arab food.

JERUSALEN, ISRAEL

Numa desses passeios com o Ehab encontramos a Bárbara no meio do shopping center. Na visita seguinte fui ate a gangway do Vision of the Seas ver se encontrava a Vivi e já na chegada dou de cara com o Sherek e a Paula. Resultado fiquei por um bom tempo no navio e reencontrei uma grande galera da Island Cruises.

In one of these tours with Ehab we met Barbara in the middle of the shopping mall. On the next visit I went until the Vision of the Seas gangway to see if I would find Vivi and was already on the arrival I walked into the Sherek and Paula. As a Result I stayed on the ship for a long time met lots of people from Island Cruises.

DEAD SEA, ISRAEL

Israel foi mega interessante e fascinante, visitei varias lugares e fui ate sozinho de trem a Tel Aviv. O único incomodo era o rigoroso sistema de segurança no porto e nos demais lugares fechados, tudo e revistado. Como por la o serviço militar e obrigatório para homens e mulheres e super comum ver jovens de uniformes e armados pelas cidades. No trem de volta de Tel Aviv tinha um rapaz de cerca de 20 anos cochilando no banco de frente pro meu com uma metralhadora no colo, só rezei pra ele não acordar assustado de algum pesadelo.

Israel was mega interesting and fascinating, I visited several places and even went to Tel Aviv by train by myself. The only discomfort was the strict security at the port and at the other closed places, everything was searched. As the military service is compulsory for both men and women, it is very common to see young people in uniform and armed around the cities. On the train back to Tel Aviv there was a boy about 20 years of dozing on the bench right in front mine with a machine gun on his lap, I just prayed for him not to wake up scared from any nightmare.

MASADA, ISRAEL

Na Itália o navio ainda fazia escala em Nápoles e era ótimo poder passar mais tempo nesse porto que eu já conhecia e adoro; mesmo com todo o “caos” da cidade. Foi nessa cidade que passei um dos dias mais legais a bordo do Island Escape que também estava no porto nesse dia. Infelizmente era pouco tempo pra passar com tanta gente amiga que morria de saudade; mas lógico que fiquei um bom tempo com a Paty.

In Italy the ship was still calling at Naples and it was great to spend more time in that port that I already knew and love, even with all the "chaos" from that city. It was here in this city that I spent one of the coolest days aboard the Island Escape which was also in the port at that day. Unfortunately, the time was too short to spend with such friendly people I was missing badly, but obviously that I spent a good time with Paty.

TELAVIV, ISRAEL

Antes do fim da temporada do Equinox no Mediterrâneo e de irmos pro Caribe houve varias mudanças na tripulação e lógico que o clima mudou um pouco, mas vou deixar essas historias para um próximo post.

Before the end of the Med season at Equinox, and also before going to the Caribbean there were several crew changes and of course that the environment changed a bit, but I'll leave those stories for a future post.

What’s up? Hope you’re all fine...

Bem faz muito tempo desde a ultima atualização... No momento estou “fora” da vida abordo. Fiz um contrato no Equinox e outro que comecei no Ocean Village e depois fui transferido pro Aegean Odyssey. Os últimos tempos a bordo foram repletos de trabalho e com as funções que estava exercendo ficou bem difícil manter as atualizações do blog. Vou dividir as ultimas “aventuras e desventuras” em alguns posts.

Well, it’s been a long time since my last update ... Currently I'm "out" of the life on board. I had a contract at Equinox and another one that started at Ocean Village and then I was transferred over to Aegean Odyssey. At the end of this last contract I was full of work and the tasks I was performing made it very difficult to keep the blog updated. I'll share the latest “adventures and misadventures” in some future posts.

EQUINOX IN CARTAGENA, SPAIN

O contrato do Equinox me fez conhecer mais pessoas que espero levar para toda a vida. Foi uma experiência repleta de altos e baixos que me trouxe muito amadurecimento profissional e pessoal. Vou tentar passar um pouco dessa vivência de inaugurar um navio luxuoso de uma das maiores companhias de cruzeiros do mundo. E como eu disse na minha ultima reunião de departamento: “Do Equinox vou usar as situações ruins como experiência e as boas vivências como recordação no meu coração!”.

My contract at Equinox gave the opportunity to meet more people that I could expect and I hope I will take them all with me for a lifetime. It was such an experience full of ups and downs that brought me much personal and professional maturity. I'll try to share some of that experience of opening a luxury ship from one of the largest cruise companies in the world. And as I had just said on my last department meeting: "From the Equinox will use the bad situations as experiences and good experiences as dearly memories in my heart!"

THIS IS REALLY INSIDE A CRUISE SHIP!!!

Bem sai do Saga Rose no dia 22 de junho de 2009, em Liverpool e fui pra Southampton onde fiquei 3 dias ate me mandarem pra Lisboa em busca do meu visto americano, que acreditava-se seria mais fácil e rápido do que em Londres. Com todos os contratempos o visto so ficou pronto em 3 semanas e mesmo com as incertezas de datas pude ir até as cidades de Fátima e do Porto e ainda explorar um pouco mais Lisboa. O Leandro foi um grande amigo que conheci e ajudou muito nesse período.

Well, I left Saga Rose on June 22, 2009, in Liverpool and went to Southampton where I stayed for three days until they sent me to Lisbon to get my American visa, which was expected to get it easier and faster than in London. With all the setbacks the visa was ready in 3 weeks and even with the uncertainty of dates I could manage to go to the cities of Porto and Fatima and still explore a bit more of Lisbon. Leandro was a great friend I met who helped a lot during that period.

EQUINOX SHOP SET UP TEAM

Consegui embarcar no Equinox somente no dia 17 de julho quando a arrumação das lojas já estava quase pronta, mas ainda havia muito pra ser organizado e providenciado. Imagina que não tínhamos nenhum material de escritório. Bem a primeira vista tudo era encanto, o navio e simplesmente lindo e repleto de atrações que muita gente já mais imaginaria em um navio de cruzeiros. Como por exemplo 8 elevadores panorâmicos que vão do deck 02 ate o deck 15, com vista para piscina e mar no últimos andares; campo de golfe com grama natural; bar com balcão de gelo; discoteca moderna; os restaurantes; a decoração entre outros.

I managed to board the Equinox only on July 17 when the loading of stores was almost ready, but there was still much to be organized and arranged. Imagine that we had no office supplies. Well at first glance everything was enchanting; the ship is simply beautiful and full of attractions that many people would never have imagined on a cruise ship. Eg: 8 panoramic lifts that go from deck 2 all the way up to deck 15, overlooking the pool and the sea from the upper decks; a golf course with natural grass, ice bar counter, modern nightclub, restaurants, decoration among others.

WITH LIV AND MORNAY: WORKING A LOT TO MANAGER THE SHOPS

Nas lojas eu já havia sido avisado do que encontraria: 18 lojas, 27 vendedores, 2 assistentes (eu era um deles) e 1 gerente, além da belas apresentação. No Saga Rose era apenas 1 grande loja com 2 vendedoras e eu de gerente. No geral a mudança de navios foi como mudar da cidade pequena para a uma grande metrópole. Afinal a Rose foi desativada no ultimo mês de dezembro e o Equinox traz varias inovações.

Regarding to the stores, I had already been warned that I would find: 18 stores, 27 sale staff, two assistants (I was one of them) and a manager, in addition to the beautiful presentation. At Saga Rose there was just a great store with two staff and I manager. In general, changing the ship was like moving from small town to a metropolis. Rose was deactivated in this last December and Equinox, on the other hand, brings several innovations.

O clima da tripulação quando cheguei no Equinox era o melhor possível e mesmo com uma carga horária mais puxada e com varias obrigações tudo era alegria e contentamento. Antes do cruzeiro inaugural que fizemos para a Noruega o navio fez várias viagens curtas de Southamptom ate o meio do mar para convidados e agentes de turismo de varias partes do mundo. E mesmo com algumas restrições, nos que trabalhávamos nas lojas podíamos usufruir varias das atrações do navio.

The crew mood was the best possible when I arrived at the Equinox and even with a demand on the shifts and several obligations everything was joy and contentment. Before the inaugural cruise to Norway the ship had several short trips from Southampton to the middle of the sea for guests and travel agents from several parts of the world. And even with some restrictions, all of us that worked at the stores were able to enjoy many of the attractions.

Antes da abertura para passageiros tivemos um jantar maravilhoso no Silhouette restaurante, seguido da 1ª apresentação do show Equinox (que e algo fenomenal especialmente se comparado com os show que havia visto em outros navios) e que terminou com uma bela crew party na discoteca de passageiros. O Crew Bar so foi inaugurado dias depois e nesse dia acho que quase toda a tripulação estava presente. Houve ainda varias outras cerimônias como troca de bandeira onde o navio foi oficialmente entregue pelos fabricantes a Celebrity Cruises.

Before the opening to the passengers, we had a wonderful dinner at Silhouette restaurant, followed by the first presentation of the Equinox show (which is phenomenal especially when compared with the show I have seen on other ships) and ending with a nice crew party at the passenger disco. The Crew Bar was opened only days later and on this day I think that almost the entire crew was there. There were also several other ceremonies as the banner exchange where the ship was officially delivered to Celebrity Cruises by the manufacturers.

Num navio com cerca de 1200 tripulantes e bem difícil conhecer todo mundo e com o grande número de funcionarios nas lojas eu passava a maior parte do tempo com eles. A tripulação de brasileiros era bem pequena, uns 10 e com o tempo a gente se encontrava no crew bar pra poder falar um pouco de português e com isso fiz novos grandes amigos. Havia ainda aos portugueses (bem legais) além da Sonia da África do Sul e a Victoria do Canadá que falam português por causa dos pais. O Nicolas e argentino (com cara de japonês), mas e praticamente brasileiro embora cisme em torcer pro time do Maradonna.

In a ship with around 1200 crew members it is very difficult to know everyone and with the large number of employees from the stores I used spent much time with them. The Brazilian crew was quite small, about 10 and with time we used meet at the crew bar so I could speak a little Portuguese and with that I made great new friends. There was also the Portuguese (Very cool) and Sonia from South Africa and Victoria from Canada who also speak Portuguese because of their parents. Nicolas is from Argentina (with a Japanese face), but practically Brazilian, although he insists on rooting for Maradonna’s team.

Mesmo com esse pequeno numero de brasileiros conseguimos (com grande ajuda do Humberto de Portugal) fazer a festa da Independência do Brasil, que foi legal, mas como o povo não conhece muito bem nossa cultura acham que éramos malucos pelo tanto que dançamos, cantamos e tomamos caipirinha. Alias o Daniel, um romeno que trabalhou comigo no Escape e já fez temporada brasileira era o encarregado de preparar as caipirinhas e pelo visto ele aprendeu bem a preparar nosso drink e ainda sabe cantar Poeira.

Even with this small number of Brazilians, we managed (with the great help of Humberto from Portugal) to make the celebration party of the Brazil Independence Day, which was nice, but as people do not know our culture very well they thought we were crazy for dancing, singing and drinking caipirinha all that much. By the way, Daniel, a Romanian who had worked with me and had also done the Brazilian Season at the Escape was responsible for preparing the caipirinhas and it looks like he learned how to prepare our drink very well and even sing “Poeira”.

Com tanta gente a bordo algumas regalias como serviço de camareiro que eu tinha no Saga Rose são exclusividade de pouco e as cabines são menores que em navios mais antigos. A primeira cabine em que morei além de minúscula (principalmente pra alguém do meu tamanho) era muito quente e nem o ventilador que comprei resolvia. Mas outras coisas como crew mess e os quiosques para depositar dinheiro funcionam muito bem e facilitam bastante. A internet na cabine e as TVs modernas para cada um dos tripulantes também eram ótimas, mas quando falhavam demorava um pouco ate alguém poder vir consertar.

With so many people on board a few perks like the room service I had at Saga Rose is exclusive service of a few cabins at Equinox. The cabins were also smaller than the older ships. The first one I lived was tiny (especially for someone from my size), too hot and the fan I bought did not cool it down. But other things like the crew mess and the kiosks to deposit money were very good. The Internet in the cabin and the modern TVs for each of the crew were also great, but it took quite a while to have someone over to fix it.

Nem eu acredito, fiquei apenas 5 semanas de férias e embarquei novamente, fui chamado de ultima hora para cobrir férias da gerente do navio Saga Rose. Ela (navios são chamados no feminino) foi construída na década de 60 e este e será desativada em dezembro. Apesar do tempo Ela esta bem conservada e opera no sistema cinco estrelas.

I can’t believe, I had only 5 week holiday and joined the ship again. I was asked to cover up another manager’s holiday at Saga Rose. She (ships are referred as she) was built in the 60’s and will be put down in December. Even though she’s been on for a long time she is in good condition and operates under a five star pattern.

DUBLIN, IRELAND: REECONTRANDO OS AMIGOS DO (MEETING THE FRIENDS FROM) ISLAND STAR

O navio e pequeno com capacidade para pouco mais de 500 passageiros e com muitas mais formalidades do que eu estava acostumado. A verdade e que nos quesitos trabalho, acomodação e alimentação a melhora foi bem significativa. Já no quesito vida social a mudança foi bem radical e ainda estou em adaptação: sem festas!

The ship is small with capacity for a bit more than 500 pax and with a lot more formalities that I was used to. The truth is that concerning to work, accommodation and food, the change was a lot better. On the other hand, social life changed radically and I am still under adaptation: No Parties!

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA WITH ANDREA (PERU):

SAUDADES (MISS YOU A LOT)

Quando vi o navio pela primeira vez tomei um susto com o tamanho dele (e menor que o Escape). O teto e baixo nas áreas da tripulação, muitas vezes tenho que andar meio curvado e nos primeiros dias eu bati minha cabeça varias vezes em alguns locais. No refeitório era eu entrar que a galera, maioria filipinos, ficava olhando espantada com a minha altura. Uma das minhas cabeçadas no teto fez um grupo deles cair na gargalhada.

When I saw the ship for the first time I got scared with her size (she is smaller than the Escape). The ceiling is quite lower in the crew areas and most of the times I had to bend in order to walk. In the first few days I hit my head for many times all over the ship. As soon as I stepped into the mess, everybody stared at me awed with my height. One of the time I hit my head at the ceiling made them burst into laughter.

TENERIFE, (CANARY ISLANDS), SPAIN, MY GIRLS: ROX (ROMANIA) AND MAY (FILIPINAS): SAUDADES (MISS YOU A LOT)

A composição da tripulação e algo mais diferente ainda: cerca de 340, desses cerca de 270 são filipinos, cerca de 40 britânicos, alguns americanos, russos, ucranianos, romenos e os isolados: uma peruana, um frances, uma italiana, entre outros e eu o único brasileiro. Nem em Londres eu ficava tanto tempo sem falar português. Ainda bem que tem a Andrea (do Peru) e às vezes escapo do inglês pro espanhol.

The crew nationalities were quite different: we were 340 crew and 270 were Philippines, 40 British and some Americans, Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians and the isolated ones: 1 Peruvian, 1French, 1 Italian and some others and I was the only Brazilian as well. Not even in London I spent such a long time without speaking Portuguese. At least there was Andrea (from Peru) so sometimes I would sneak from English and go to Spanish.

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

O itinerário foi algo que me motivou de imediato: novas cidades e países. Mas, o navio quebrou no cruzeiro que eu mais queria conhecer os lugares, ficamos três dias em Bremerhaven na Alemanha e foram cancelados do cruzeiro: Stockolmo (Suécia), Helsinki (Finlândia, que estava louco pra conhecer), Copenhagen (Dinamarca) e Oslo (Noruega, mas conheci outras cidades desse pais). Mesmo assim visitei novos países: Rússia, Estônia, Alemanha e Noruega.

The itinerary was something that motivated me from the beginning: new cities and countries. But the ship broke down right on the cruise I most wanted to visit the places, we stayed in Bremerhaven – Germany for three days and had been cancelled from the itinerary: Stockholm (Sweden), Helsinki (Finland, where I was eager to get to know), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Oslo (Norway; but I visited other cities from this country). Even though, I visited new countries such as Russia, Estonia, Germany and Norway.

Foi legal ir ate a Rússia, mas tive que pagar pra ir às excursões com os passageiros, pois alguns documentos meus não ficaram prontos a tempo e não podia descer como tripulante.

It was cool to go to Russia, but I had to pay to join the excursions as passenger, because some of my documents were not ready in time and I was not allowed to disembark as crew.

LISBON, PORTUGAL

O frio tem sido algo novo também, nesses lugares praia e sol e luxo. O engraçado e que em alguns lugares eu sinto frio, mesmo vestindo vários agasalhos, e na rua vejo pessoas só de camisetas comemorando a temperatura de 15 graus, dizendo que esta calor.

The cold was something new to me as well, in these places the beach and the Sun is luxury. The funny thing though is that in some places I was very cold even though I was wearing proper clothes and on the streets I saw people wearing only t-shirts celebrating the 15 degree temperature saying that is was warm.

LISBON, PORTUGAL: BOY SCOUTS

Visitar Dublin foi uma das coisas mais legais desse contrato no Saga Rose, a cidade e muito legal e estava um maravilhoso dia de verão, algo bem incomum segundo as pessoas do local. Mas, o legal mesmo desse dia foi reencontrar o pessoal do Island Star que esta morando por la. Alem de visitar a fabrica da Guinness e caminhar pelas principais ruas eles me levaram pra conhecer alguns autênticos Pubs irlandeses. Infelizmente não conseguimos estar todos juntos ao mesmo tempo devido aos compromissos deles, mas foi um dia inesquecível.

Visiting Dublin was one of the best things I’ve done in this contract onboard Saga Rose. The city was very cool and it was a wonderful summer day, something not very typical according to the local people. But what was really the best was meeting the guys from Island Star that are living there. Not to mention my visit to Guinness Mill and walk around the main streets and visit those typical Irish Pubs. Unfortunately we couldn’t manage to get us all together at the same time due to their routine, but it was amazing.

TALLIN, ESTONIA: DEPECHE MODE BAR!!!

O trabalho esta legal; adoro as “minhas meninas”: a Rox (romena) e a May (filipina) e elas são minhas maiores companhias a bordo. E apesar da vida social bem tranqüila novamente estou conhecendo pessoas bem legais como as romenas Olympia e Joanna. E divertido notar como as desavenças do meu primeiro contrato com os romenos foram superadas e hoje tenho amigos de la que adoro e morro de saudades.

The work is cool; I Love “my girls”: Rox (Romanian) and May (Philippine) and they are my best companion onboard. Even though my social life is at easy I am meeting some nice and great people such as the Romanians Olympia and Joanna. It is funny to see how my issues with them during my first contract were overcome and today I have friends that I love and miss a lot living there.

A “massa” filipina e bem fechada devido à língua, nas áreas de tripulação eles ficam mais entre si, mas a maioria e super atenciosa e bem legal (mesmo). No dia do acidente com o avião da Airfrance que saiu do Rio de Janeiro vários deles vieram comentar sobre e se preocuparam se eu conhecia alguém a bordo.
